« on: September 05, 2012, 07:34:50 PM »
I need to sell one of these.... Im so torn... you're opinions please. Both are in about the same condition... One is a 1973 Honda cb500 and the other one is a 1980 XS650.

Heres the Honda

I had an 81 and the PO had a massive heart attack while wrenching on it.  80,81 were the worst years for the xs650.  The TCI ignition needs to be replaced with point and or pamco and cost up to $300 bucks.  Factor that into your decision.

The pamco is definitely factored in... I know it is extremely easy to get aftermarket and oem parts for the XS650 relatively cheap...  +1 for the XS?

As much as I like the XS650s my preference has always been 79 and older, the later bikes with those horrible seats were never comfortable for me and the carbs less adjustable.  I like the paint on the 500 so I say keep that one.

500, any day.  XS 650's are cool and all, but I'd take a four over a twin anytime.

 Keep both. That's what I did. ;)
The TCI only needs to be replaced IF it fails. It's only $300 if you go with the Monster coils, etc.

I can't decide which one I like better. The sewing machine smoothness and high revs of the CB, or the low end grunt and simplicity of the XS. The XS is MUCH better for modding, if that's your thing. You can make ANYthing out of them.

The SOHC4 forum is really a terrible place to ask this question....

I bet you would have the exact opposite response if you asked on a Yamaha forum.

KEEP THE SOHC4!!!!

I've got an 83 XS 650 heritage special that I'm still trying to figure out what to do with. I got it in exchange for getting another 83 XS 650 running for a co-worker earlier this year and I really didn't want it. Problem is is that it was the parts bike I used to get the other other running so a few things are missing PLUS it's got no title. Still debating whether it's worth getting a title for and fixing it up and sell it.

The XS 650 I got up and running was OK I guess (torky sucker) but I'll keep my 550. :)

I owned 3 XS650's and loved them. Easy to work on, but the seat on yours is the worst
one yet.

The CB550 is also easy to work on, but parts for the engine might be pricer.

Considering the number of xs650's built, I would keep it instead, but replace the seat.

peace,
michel

Something tells me that if you sell the 500, you will miss it tremendously and it will cause a severe depression. You should keep the 500 for your mental health.

The CB500 is a girls bike, keep the Yam. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Sorry Michel, I take it back. The CB500 is a man's bike, just built for really small men with breasts and vagina's. If you want a two wheeled sewing machine keep the 500, otherwise sell it and keep the 650, which only a real man could enjoy. ;D

Sell the Yammie.  XS is a great bike, but get an older model

Same here, if the Yamma was older they might be on a more level playing field.

You guys are so polite. If it was an XS2 yes, a custom no.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.
