I could see some of the mods Mike made before he mentioned them and have read a few threads on the board of Hondaman talking the thread owner through his guidance on what worked well for the 550.  I respect Mikes work and his reputation and Brent's recent track record was through part of the benefits of Mike's head work. So, while I don't have the skill to look at a head and know if it will produce good results I trusted Mike when he said it was good. From a artistic point of view it is beautiful workmanship.

I would imagine Mike has been through some heads that didn't work as expected and were disappointing.  What works on a SB Chevy doesnt translate to a MC and some things do.

But numbers and big numbers don't always translate to great results, as it is part of a system and everything needs to work together to create a winning formula. Mike has the knowledge to provide that guidance I think.

yes mike , you know this head will work because you have seen the flow figures and have had previous experience with similar heads .
it just seemed odd that other people can simply look at a picture of a head and say ' thats good ' if that was the case you could throw your flow bench in the bin and just post a few pictures of your heads on the forum , the experts could then tell you which ones are good and which ones are not .  think of all the time that would save you mike !

I'm sure that a lot of praise for Mike's port work comes from the immense respect he has earned over many years of perfecting these heads. I too may not be an expert on visual assessment of the work pictured here, but it has me striping my spare head and boxing it to ship.

How long is the wait time for this level of work?

About 12 weeks Jimmy.....I am very busy with some outstanding projects. My 1000cc is finally only days away from starting. Only 2 years in the making. I feel guilty working on it to be honest but I have to get some riding on it this fall.

dont feel guilty about that ,  just say to your self your doing product evaluation for your customers .  will this be the first of the 1000's to be run mike ?

APE has the crank for lightening and cylinders for the big bore JE pistons, web 58b cam, adjustable cam sprocket, CR 29's, Yoshi header, ARP studs, Dynoman clutch, Dyna ignition and several other little performance items on a CB550 that should weigh in under 400lbs. I can't wait for this one to come together!!!

Nah Jim, they run 26's on hot 400's, i know a lot of guys here use 29's on their 750's but a good HIPO 750 can run 31mm CR's easily so the 29's should be just right for a hot 500-550.

Nah Jim, they run 26's on hot 400's, i know a lot of guys here use 29's on their 750's but a good HIPO 750 can run 31mm CR's easily so the 29's should be just right for a hot 500-550. 

My 500/4 racer and i believe that also Howell's, run CR29's and that's with just 500cc, no big bore. That said, i do think that for a street application CR26 or VM26 (actually 27) are a better option on a 550/600

Incedently the new 26's are on the bench if anyone is interested. You need your own spigots though.

no, I haven't. I do want to but I know the number would just put me back in the shop trying to push up a number that doesn't affect my fun factor.

I should do it before winter. The clutch has some trouble holding the power in 3rd gear, tends to start slipping 1/2 way through the pull after I've been beating on it. Barnett clutch and springs with shims added to the springs, regular petroleum oil in crankcase. Sounds like a barking dog when I clutch out now and then. But this is a different problem for a different time.

yes RAF, all new plates, frictions and steels, new springs also. I guess I'm just making too much power. hehe

Bead blasting the steels can help with that Kevin. Not a sure cure but I have seen it work. To bad there are no double steel plates like the later K/F's had (spring washer in the center). Those work well.
