A mate of mine buys and sells bikes, he pretty much always gives me first option on them.  Today he picked up an '84 VF1000F, it is in quite nice condition.  It only needs a couple of light bulbs to be ready for the road.  I have been looking for a bike that is a little more comfortable than my 650 for longer trips for quite some time.  The engine sounds beautiful, no tappet/cam chain noise, the exhaust on it is a little loud for my liking, but I love that V4 note ;D.  I took it for a short ride and it definitely has balls, it just seems to pull from nowhere.  It doesn't feel overly fast, but it piles on the speed damn quick.  What I want to know is what are these bikes like on a longer trip, do they make a good touring machine?  I have read about the cam issues they can have, but I have also read that these were sorted out during the 83 model year  ???.  Like I mentioned before the engine runs as sweet as a nut.  I'm seriously considering this one, it just seems too good to pass up, especially with the price he is asking for it  :-X.

Could that be the one with the gear drive to the cams?  I have only seen them in pictures.  A 92 VFR is very comfortable and a 88 CBR 600 is too. The mid 80's to the mid 90's Hondas are comfy bikes.(sporty types)  Later, when racing bikes were copied to the street bikes, they lost some comfort.  I bet the seating postion is pretty good.  A stock 86 GIXXER will let me know within a half mile that it hurts.  But it also corners as well as anything I have ever ridden on the street.   If the price is right I am sure it will work.  Does it have full body work?

Going by year it is one of the ones with a cam chain.  I only rode it for a couple of minutes but it seemed to have a really comfy seating position, everything was where it should be.  It will be as shown in the photo, it is missing the pointy lower part of the fairing, but that doesn't do much for rider comfort.

my brother loves these and will not hear a bad word against them . he got his first in the mid 80's  [ i think it was an 84 model ] had that for 20 years then bought another to go with it ! he did have some cam and cam chain issues over the years and a crank went when we where on the way home from spain  [ not the bikes fault he knew it was getting low on oil , bought the oil , didnt put it in , doh ]  rather than fix the motor he bought a later gear driven cam engine and fitted that [ not a straight swap but not to bad ]  they make a great touring bike and if anything happened to this one ive no doubt he would go straight out and get another .
