Ignition Switch
« on: June 29, 2006, 10:49:07 PM »
I had a broken tab on my ignition switch, I have heard this is not too uncommon.  So I went to the local Honda dealer to see about a replacement.  The young man behind the counter (didn't even know a CB550 was made by Honda) informed me I could not buy just the switch.  I needed to by the whole assembly for $224.00!!!

I was in shock and removed my self from the store.

Later I checked with DennisKirk.com and found an OEM replacement for only $24.99.  I had expected to pay a little more for "genuine Honda parts"  but not nearly 10 times.

OK my rant is over.

I have really enjoyed learning from this sight.  I am new to both SOHC/4's and motorcycles in general.  There is so much good info here.  Thank you all.

That OEM isnt, its a pattern part but who cares it will work! The honda one comes complete with the seat lock as well so that all the keys are the same. I take it yours is a 77/78 with the switch up between the clocks, if so you can get just the plastic "electrical" bit so you dont change your key.
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Remember "Its always in the last place you look" COURSE IT IS YOU STOP LOOKIN THEN!

The young man behind the counter (didn't even know a CB550 was made by Honda)...

I once called in to my local Honda shop to get a part for my 1982 Honda CB750SC, Nighthawk. The guy behind the counter tried to tell me that the bike didn't exist. I told him that I had to beg to differ since I had one sitting right outside my door. It took some convincing to finally get him to find the bike.

Gotta love it   ;)
