Installing Shocks on my CB550
« on: May 22, 2010, 06:17:50 PM »
Just bought these aftermarket shocks but am not sure how to install them.
No instructions came with em. Anyone have any experience?

Replacing shocks is a simple process. Put the bike on the center stand so the shocks are not compressed, and the rear tire is slightly off the ground. Remove the nuts that hold them on at the top, I believe they also attach to the grab bar. remove the nuts/bolts at the bottom. Then you just pull them off. Put the new bushings in the new shocks, reinstall them in reverse order.

Good luck!

The only stupid mistake I made was putting the wrong bushing (too narrow) on and having to push like hell to get it out.

They look the same as a set I got from CRC2 online. I was a bit disappointed. I'm going to have to shim both sides of the top mount because they're not wide enough for the top pin. The clevis on the bottom is also wider than the bush in the swing arm, so I'm going to have to shim those as well. The bottom bolt is now to short as well, so longer bolts are in order. Will probably have to get longer bolts & cut to length because the increase isn't much.

Yeah, I shoulda mentioned that. I needed longer bolts. You can go from 30mm to 35mm and be ok. I got a 40mm on the pipe side.

And, now that you mention I think I better get some shims for along the bottom. Thanks.
