Chewed up Oil filter bolt repair
« on: September 09, 2012, 07:25:42 PM »
Just a quick note on repairing a chewed up oil filter bolt. the PO had the old one at about the place where it was a risk that I might have to drill it out and possibly damage the oil filter cover.
I got a nice grade five  3/4'coarse thread nut and roughed up one end with a grinder, and carefully roughed up the flange and hex drive on the bolt. Used a little  JB weld to bond the nut to the flange of the oil bolt. made sure to contain the JB weld at the junction with electrical tape, and taped everything I did not the JB to stick to. Then I filled the thread cavity with JB and used a C-Clamp and a small piece of Tupperware lid to keep the clamp from bonding to the nut.. The plastic also made the end nice and smooth when it squeezed out the excess.
Fifty cent repair if you already have some JB weld lying around. No way the huge nut will ever round off. Let it sit two days and it is a very strong repair

Sounds like an OK fix but for less than $15.00 there are lots of pretty new ones out there with the larger and better 17mm heads. Can't beat your price though.   http://www.ebay.com/itm/CB400F-CB550-CB750-CB900-CBX-GL1000-OIL-FILTER-BOLT-/360484879665?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item53ee92bd31

That bolt has a large shoulder on it so a little anti-sieze on there will help that and not over tightening.

Yes, the stick occurs between that flange and the filter cover body. While overtightening should be avoided, its the chemical reaction between the underside of the flange and the filter cover that makes it stick. That reaction is caused by exposure to the elements, road environment, or condensation cycles during storage. Anti seize is appropriate.

Bolts that are broken free 2-3 times per year, as intended, have no problem even with the 10mm head. But when bikes are stored and neglected for decades, it seizes.
