I use a small ultrasonic cleaner at work, and the vibes come from the bottom center. I would try it like that. Would have liked to see a clean solution with a dirty item going into it.

Bla bla

OK. Get a clean bucket, fill it with warm water and whatever degreaser you prefer, put the sander so it vibes from the center bottom of the bucket and....drop your dirty ish in there. (all on video of course)

Here is another one:

how a redneck inventor cleans carburetors part 1

But I have yet to see a before and after pic of a carb actually cleaned by one these redneck parts cleaners.

Interesting, but I also would like to see a dirty carb first,
then the after picture before I would try this.

The concept sounds logical, but does it really work?

Hey Luap,
when you say "heat helps a lot"
did you try it cold first?
What and how did you heat up the solution?

Hmmm.....

I'm thinking that the sander vibrations do absolutely nothing at all in terms of simulating ultrasonic cleaners.

The ultrasonic cleaners work, IIRC, by creating microscopic cavitation bubbles and when those bubbles form & collapse, they remove a particle of contamination from the substrate (base metal) with them.

A palm sander strapped to the outside of a bucket does no more than a good vigorous stirring would, IMO.  I'm thinking that any cleaning activity seen here is strictly because of the liquid cleaner itself, along with the heat, as mentioned.  I don't think there's any "ultrasonic" action at all.

Ultrasonic cleaners operate at frequencies between 20,000 ~ 400,000 Hz.  A 13,000 rpm sander is operating at 13,000/60 = 217 Hz.

So, I'd call it a "homemade agitator" not a "homemade ultrasonic cleaner".

:)

Yeah I tried it cold the other day when I put it together dropped my carbs in. It cleaned them. I did the heat yesterday on the pistons b/c the carbon was built up pretty good, I took a heating pad an wrapped it around the bucket as much as it would go. Im looking for a 5 gallon bucket band heater or ill go 5 gallon metal bucket an do a heating element.
This thing makes some bubbles, Theres no comparison between a real USC an this thing. but If you want to save yourself alot of scrubbing an cans of cleaners this thing works. I can say in the past Ive used the same solution in just hot an cold water an it doesnt do anything

agreed. The only way to check this would be to use to simillarly dirty carbs, one in the solution with the sander and one in the same solution without agitation for same amount of time. remove rinse and compare.

...or a more complete comparison would be comparing to an actual USC.

One of you guys who are trying this need to do a comparison test by using the same solution, and doing it without the sander.  We need to know if the vibrations are really doing the job, or if it is just the solution.

And FYI, this is not "ultrasonic".  True ultrasonic happens at a much higher frequency.

Interesting idea but not sure it will do the same job.  I have several videos on YouTube for cleaning carbs via ultrasonic cleaner with vinegar

so after 20 mintues
didnt really break up all the old gas in the bowl(possibly need a better solution to break up that old of gas) but the outside of the carb grim is much better
I just had a buddy tell me about vinigar think Ill give it a try
anyways If anything It just saves some time on elbow grease
I agree I dont think it will or does the same job as a real machine but for 30 bucks it was worth the money

Simple Green will cut through the gum. Get a clear plastic container used for take out Chinese soup and drop two of them them in there for an hour. Full strength works best.
