CB650 Can't find last two head bolts
« on: September 04, 2012, 05:39:26 PM »
Hey all, I'm trying to pull the head off my '81 650C to have it rebuilt, but I can't find the last two head bolts (the two in the middle front on either side of the cam chain passage). All the others had 12mm heads and came out pretty easy, but I can't get a purchase on the middle two, shining a light down there, the heads look different, maybe bigger or flatter? Is there something different about those two? or should I be on the lookout for some PO foolishness?

Do you have the workshop manual?

If you do not ,I would be buying one.

I've ben using the Hona shop manual online, it doesn't mention anything unusual about those two bolts.

No those should all be the same if you can see the bolt heads but you can't get any purchase that would tell me a different size.

The 650's only have two main sizes of bolts on the top end the 12mm and the smaller 8mm (i think) for the valve covers (not counting the four allen head bolts for the two outbound covers).

My two bolts were so gummed up with dirt and grime I had to clean them out to even get my socket on them, are yours really nasty looking?

My bike had so much crud in there that I had to use about a can carb cleaner with the wand to clean the head off to get at the head.  Please be careful before you reassemble because those holes pick up a bunch of dirt and that can prevent you torqueing them down correctly.  I would suggest once you get it apart, clean the jug with a power washer before you put it back together.

I'm guessing you removed the rubber "pucks" that cover some of the holes. Mine is an '82, but I would think they're the same. The 2 bolts at the back of the cam chain tunnel are longer then the rest, I marked them in green. Don't forget about the 2 with the 10mm head at the front & back of the head. The rest are 12mm head. All the 12mm headed bolts have washers.

Thanks all, I figured out it was just 30+ years of crud sitting on top of the bolt flange preventing the socket from seating properly, picked it out with a small screwdriver and got them out.

Good deal. Dirt sucks. I've run into that on spark plugs at work. It's amazing how solid that stuff gets
