Changing the overlays on your gauges
« on: September 14, 2012, 08:55:49 AM »
Anyone on here ever buy the gauge overlays they sell on eBay?  I don't see how the factory gauges come apart so I don't know how you use these.

Many threads on this. Basically you remove the chrome ring from the gauge by bending the lip on one side of it up with a flat screwdriver or paint can lid opener. Others have cut the ring and used JB weld to glue it back on. Joker Machine also sell clamp rings to replace the chrome ring. Once the rings off the rest is easy. Remove the needle using a
dinner fork as a lever under the needle. Pry against one of the face screws then remove the screws to remove the face.
Try using the Google search from the Sohc tech main page and you should find lots of info.

There are some good post as wrenchmuch said. The paint can opener grinded down worked great for me. Ordered new faces from a member of the board, Marcel...top notch quality.

A couple of videos by Lecram.  I also purchased my new gauge faces from him.

i bought completely new/assembled gauge face plates from 000igor000 on ebay.  about $45. teardown is the most time consuming, but the results were great.
he can make what you want if you dont find it in his store.

Removing and installing the retaining ring is definitely the most time consuming part of it all which is why I haven't gotten around to doing my speedo yet ...... but tach looks cool and I got my overlays from an ebay seller.
