Stuck cover bolts and gasket recommendations.
« on: January 28, 2013, 06:18:35 PM »
I'm taking all the covers off the engine case to clean, polish, and replace with Allen heads. I've gotten a majority off but there several that won't budge. The ones that case loose, loosened easily with a hand held impact driver but the ones left are stripping and one broke my impact bit. They aren't exactly in a place to get pb blaster into and vice grips are slipping off.

What would you recommend for a good brand of gasket? I remember hearing something about Athena but couldn't remember if they were good or #$%*.

I would drill the head off..Start with a smaller bit and slow...Work your way up until the head comes off..them some penetrating oil and visgrips should do the trick..

Cyclex has a nice kit. They also sell individually. You should definitely invest in an impact driver for stuck bolts. You'd be amazed at how well they work.

I was using an impact drive. Popped most loose fine, but stripped a few heads and the tip actually broke off in 1 bolt

I can't figure out how to use an impact driver. Seriously, I have tried and they never work. I just drill em off.

I go with the drill head off, remove cover, then vise grip/penetrating fluid idea.   Oh don't forget patience, I can never find the jar with patience in it but every time I use it I get the results I am happy with

Impact wrench!   Fairly simple insert Phillips turn the handle counter clockwise and put tension on the screw. Hit the top with a mallet. Sometimes the screw head strips..   In that case, use just the bit and a regular steel hammer and set the bit into the screw head in the old slots.  The rapping takes tension off the screw head and fashions a new grip into the Phillips slot.  Then repeat the above method with the wrench and rubber mallet. Most times they come out , only a very few need to have the heads drilled off.
