Piston ring filing
« on: September 14, 2012, 07:15:21 PM »
Should new piston rings (Standard bore) always need to be filed?

Bores are in spec, and the rings are STD sized. I haven't measured yet, but it seemed unnecessary.

I did quite a bit of searching, but I really want a clear answer on this.

Place the ring in the bore and push about 2/3rds down the bore using a piston to keep it square in the bore then measure end gap using a feeler gauge. When replacing rings in a standard bore
after a hone it's unlikely they'll need filing but you should check. Tight rings will cause a lot of damage.
