CB750 K1 replacement fork tube questions
« on: September 15, 2012, 12:34:45 PM »
Ok,

So I have a CB750 K1 and the fork legs tubes were a bit ordinary. Actually, they were stuffed.
Step 1. Disassemble forks, buy new fork legs tubes from David Silvers, try to get new lower fork leg tube pistons etc.
One piston is o.k. and I've found One NOS piston, which is on it's way.

Step 2. Thought it would be great to reassemble as much as I could and use the one good piston.

Step 3. The original fork legs tubes don't appear to be chromed where the piston slides on and the new legs tubes are. The piston won't fit...

Step 4. Post this question. Any clues about what to do next would be great.

Anyway,

My plan is to try the local engineering shop and have them precision grind the new fork legs to accept the pistons
Does this sound like a good idea?

Maybe I should email David Silvers to ask their advice...

I did a bit more asking around and a machinist friend had a look. The existing good piston (which i think is also the compression damper valve) is nearly new and the same O.D. as the N.O.S. piston but it has been honed out to suit the existing fork leg. He is going to hone both pistons (valves?) to suit the new fork tubes. Looks like problem solved.

That's just what I would have done...

Thanks Hondaman.

We spent a bit of time weighing up our options.

BTW. I received my copy of your CB750 book this week.
Thankyou for the effort you put in - it's excellent, worth every cent and hard to put it down.
I wish it was around when I started my rebuild but it's not too late.
I figure it has already saved me form making some mistakes and has given me confidence in the work i have already done
Awesome.

Awesome.

I especially love the K1-K3 bikes. It probably 'shows' in the book, but then, like I wrote on the last line of the "tribute" page... :)

I don't have a problem with that... I guess it would make no difference if I did  :)
