Topic: cb750G new project

Hi All,

I just got a CB750 as I was in love in the look for years, and now it is my winter project to turn it to a cafe racer. As I do not have a lot of experience but the will to learn is there so I will need your expertise. thank you in advance!
CB750 is very rare in Serbia so forum is my source.

First question is: Which year and model is my CB750 as I did not find the proper documentation? To start ordering parts

Welcome Dimi.  Terry knows and loves these F bikes, so I would trust his word. 

Isn't there a VIN plate on the frame that has the model year? Where did you find the bike?

CB750G, huh?! No G's in the US. Just F's and K's. Nice looking bike. It looks like a combination of the F and the K. F basically with a K looking tank and some of the rear end. Can't say for sure about the seat though. Looks aftermarket.

I cruised CMSNL.com and did not see a G listed.

Nah, it's not really a "G" Jerry, some the non-US frame/VIN numbers on F2's start with CB750G- Cheers, Terry.

Hi all,

Thank you very much for the information. Looks like it is 1977 CB750 F2.
I found it in Serbia rotting away in a garage, they are beutiful bikes but the 70s model is very rare here. So after a lot of price negotiation i brought it home with a truck. A quick replacement of spark plughs, oils, filters, new battery, carb cleaning and new float needles it started up like a kitten.

It was fine for 2 days and then cylinder no1. stoped working and now it wont start at all.
I hear some noise also from some chain inside when i tilt the bike to the left, I am not sure what it is. Looks like it will need complete engine overhaul.

Seat is giuliari aftermarket for CB750. I like it a lot.

Yeah mate, it's an F2, but it's been extensively modified, with a K series tank, rear fender etc. This is a pic of my "close to original" F2:

I will keep the modifications I like it like this. Too bad I do not have any documentation or the history, but puzzles are being put together.

Yeah mate, I like the look of your bike too, it's not as "slab sided" as a standard "F" bike with that K series tank, seat and fender treatment.

Years ago I'd thought about building a bike like yours out of some K and F "leftovers" but never got around to it, but at the time, I thought it'd be a perfect marriage of the best of both models. Tell me more about your engine problems?

Bike is looking excellent Terry. I was actually thinking how it would look with blue and yellow a bot of Swedish styling:) now I see.
I wish I could get mine to look like this for the next year.
The brake and the covers are great. You can see a lot of time and love went in to this machine.

I am trying to start up mine but cylinder 1 does not work. I think carb is leaking too much fuel and spark plug gets dirty...
What do you think about rattling noise when I tilt the bike to the left when the engine is working?

About cyl No.1-Check float level...
About noise - check the main chain and oil level!

The F2 carbs are notorious for blocked idle jets mate, and most of the problems I've seen with them not firing in one cylinder has proven to be a blocked idle jet. The idle jets are pressed in, but you can remove them with vice-grip pliers or similar, and use a really fine wire (or guitar string) to clean it until you can see daylight when looking thru it.

The rattle can be a lot of things, a really loose cam chain, (caused by a siezed adjuster) electric starter/starter clutch issue, loose alternator rotor bolt etc. Sadly it's a case or "try one thing, and if that doesn't work, try something else". I had a constant rattle and swapped out the front sprocket, replaced the starter clutch screws, checked the rotor bolt for tightness etc, and it was only when I swapped out the starter motor (which was sluggish in operation) that the noise went away. Terry,  I like that Frankenbike side cover on your bike.  This is the first time I have seen one painted and on the bike.  I really like it.  I should have bought a set at Rice O Rama when I saw them.

Thanks mate, that's not the best angle to really see the excellent work Joe did with them, those fins slightly curve around the circumference of the covers and look sweet from other angles. There are several suppliers if finned covers out there now, but Joes are up there with the best, at a much cheaper price! Cheers, Terry.
