1st-2nd shifting problems, have to tap up on lever twice cb550k
« on: September 19, 2012, 10:14:26 AM »
I recently had to replace the spring that holds the lever against the drum behind the clutch to advance the gear.

Ever since, whenever I shift from 1st to 2nd I hit a "wall" when I should be sliding into second.

If I let off the lever and try again it always slides right in.  This doesn't happen every time, I'd say probably 75%.  My clutch is adjusted perfectly (or well enough that I'm pretty sure it's not the problem).  Any ideas? Seems to depend on rpm.

Is the spring installed correctly. My bike did this when the lever return spring broke.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

how old is the oil?try new oil if its old or close to service, what rpm are you trying to up shift at?if its too low they can get stubborn sometimes, did you get a genuine spring or something that sort of fitted?

brand new 10w-40 castrol synthetic motorbike oil and yes, I'm positive I installed the spring correctly.  Interestingly enough, it did not do it at all coming back from class this afternoon.

Don't feel bad, the trans on my 550 tends to have a mind of it's own as well even with fresh oil and other times it shifts like a dream. The issue with mine is going from 2nd to 3rd.

if you havent owned the bike long or ridden it much youll get a feel for it,mine is better well hot than cold and it still takes a little finnesse with shifts, blip the throttle on every down shift, its not being show off it helps the shafts spin up to the same speed just instanlty before the dogs engage.

Yeah, I'm going on a year with it.  I've had the downshifts perfect, little blip and grab the clutch and down she goes, still does, even 2nd-1st.  I have noticed that when it's fully warm it seems a bit easier, nature of the beast I suppose.

yeah grab clutch then blip instantly, youll find they work better, also dont expect speed shifting going up,i do it a little slow and positive compared to a newer bike with slick shifting, apply a little pressure up on the stick before you grab the clutch, sort of pre load the action.
