R75/5 BMW...Thinking About It...
« on: September 20, 2012, 03:11:29 PM »
I don't have many details yet, but will get more on this Beemer tomorrow.  The price is oh-so-right, but it will need some TLC, as I'm told it has been sitting a few years.  Any general tips on this model, like big items to ask about, or watch out for?  Are these pretty simple bikes?

Details I'm told:
R75/5
Extra NOS windscreen
Deep Flange Alloy Borrani rims
Finned Deep Oil Sump,
Rear Sets
Clubman Bars

Looks like it could be fun if I get it back on the street..

Looks retro cool.  Bet it would look much better if painted a different color?

I would paint it blue probably, with some kind of white pinstriping maybe.  The odo reads 8k, but the motor was built by the previous previous owner just before selling to the current owner.  He's checking if it's titled.  I'll have to pay to ship it, but if it's titled, and just needs a little work it will be worth it.

Apparently yes. Most are double that asking price.  I don't know that much about them, though.

BMW's of that flavor are always good to go IMO. They are sedate, but really cool. Cherry or beat, those years always look cool when parked.

Not yet.  The owner is a friend of the guy I bought the Yoshi crank from.  He's getting me details like title, and confirming the price.  If the price doesn't change, I'm buying it.  Even with shipping it's a good deal.  Changed my mind on the color too: Gloss Black.  I'll probably ditch (read: store properly) the fairing too.

Well at least you got the beemer/bimmer vocabulary down.
black wouldn't look good...how about red?
There are a sea of black ones out there, red, not so common, nor is the light bmw blue.

Yes David, after having owned a Bimmer, and getting somewhat into the culture (I still really love old BMW's, and lust after 2002's) I know the difference.  I still never hear anyone pronounce Bimmer correctly..

Red would be nice, but when I picture this bike without the fairing, in a nice gloss black...I don't think it could look much better to me.  Black is also the easiest resale color IMHO.

Nope, too big for my taste.  I like the smaller R90 style ones, but those are pricey.  These bikes look cool naked.

Yeah, that looks awesome.  I'm not really a fairing guy but recently traded some parts for what I believe is an R90 fairing w/mount.
Plan to put it on my mother lode K1 one of these days.

With that big a__ Heinrich tank on there without the fairing uppers it is gonna be easy to have the tank look cartoonish.

I know these look good in black, just juxtaposition of these models being like Henry Ford's Model T/A "you can have it in any color as long as its black. "

Yes, that tank is HUGE.  I guess I'll worry about just getting it in the first place. I can't push too hard right now..guy is busy. It's a bike with lots of potential, and I like it more every time I think about it.

A BMW is next on my list as well.   The dealer in Sacramento is a good resource and helped me with my GS.   But first I have to get the 500 on the road!  I may have to hit you up for one of your orphaned exhaust systems  ;)  That is about the last major item I need to purchase.  Let me know when you get to the Northbay.

Greggo, you know we will help cheer you on spending your money.
There is a pretty extensive collection of tank variants on the BMW airhead bikes and "jim's Beemer" webpage has a nice page after page of photos of typically tanks on and off the the bikes. I am wondering if this is a metal or fiberglass tank upon looking closer again as many of the /5 tanks had a toolbox built into the top of the tank. These oversized 10-11 gallon Heinrich tanks were impossible to lift when filled and they typically covered the front of the seat which would prevent access under the seat where the tools were normally. The tank on this bike is not common and is much bigger than the black one you show above.
Being an all white refridgerator it is tough to really like the fairing and tank as it is pretty beat up and dull/dirty.
that upper fairing design is similar to the duc 700/900 fairing Paulages has on his hybrid build (former BOM bike).
Redone in a nice paintjob you might like the fairing, if not you'll just have to ship the bike and fairing to me...  ;D
Better yet, I'll drive over and pick it up.

So, what is going to happen with your world domination quest in acquiring Pop Yoshimuri parts if your bike budget is split between BMW and Honda?

Hey Spike, I'm up in Cotati & Sebastopol almost every weekend!  I've got a 750 and a little CA95 Benly, and a few others up there at my dad's shop.

David, I think this is the less common Short Wheelbase version, so if the price I was quoted (I might as well admit it: $1k)  ends up being the sale price, I'd consider this one to be a money maker.  You're right about that tank for sure, it's a behemoth!  I guess 10-11 gallons might help for long hauls...so would that fairing.  I think you're also right that if it were nicely painted, I might like the fairing a little more.

My quest buying those Pop parts has been pretty successful ;) I'm working on the world domination thing...LoL

Great to hear you have the same bike and like it!  My mind is made up to buy it, now I'm just waiting on the seller.  My contact is confident the seller will let it go.
