loss of powers after 3 fixes
« on: September 20, 2012, 12:29:20 PM »
cb750 k7

So I've been experiancing a loss of power after riding for a few min ( almost feels like I'm on 2 cyl ), so i did my searching and reading.

-battery is perfect
-plugs look alright
-replaced plug caps w ngk 5k ohm
-flushed tank and cleared any debris from petcock.

I'm sure my floats are off because the overflow tubes regularly leak gas...would this be the issue?

I'm seriously at a loss right now

If the overflows leak it's likely the float valves are worn out. It shouldn't necessarily cause a loss of power though. Does the bike sound like it's only hitting on two cylinders? Mine will only run on 2 cylinders sometimes when it needs a points adjustment. The points wear out and need adjusted. that's where I'd look

Start the bike  and let it run for a few minutes or take it for a short ride.Shut it off and take a wet rag and touch the header pipes up by the engine on all 4 pipes and compare the hissing sound of the water and see if any of the pipes are running cooler than optimal. Get you closer to finding the trouble spots. The rag should hiss loudly if all is good, watch the skin.

The symptom sounds perfect for blocked bowl vent holes.  Early PD series carbs have silly 0.020" holes in the sides of the castings for bowl vents.  The ability to run for only a few minutes, coupled with the continuous overflow, points right to this being the problem.

Why is there never enough time to do it right, but always enough time to do it over?

If the dwell cannot be brought into spec you will need new points and condensers.
