@Viktor

Pretty sure it's smartest just to pickup some used rearsets (off a 600 most likely). It's not super high on my list right now unfortunately, winter is half over and i haven't even started doing work yet :s

In other news i did find one of these for cheap, and in "new" condition...

So I had to dig out my trailer.

Then go do some work.

But I finally got it to my house

And dug out my front end parts, hopefully there'll be some time this week to start taking her apart and building new parts.

So i had an hour this afternoon and started pulling stuff apart, had to deal with the gassy smell in my garage  :-[

Start

Finish

Need to go get my centre stand and jack stands so I can start pulling real stuff soon.

Any suggestions on exhaust bolts? Just soak and remove? Or are they going to give me trouble?

Mine gave me some trouble I broke the exhaust stud but mind you I forgot to soak them before hand. Just means I get new hd studs :D

kk, I'll get the soak on them, I have the stock allen bolts, so i think i'll try to hit them with the impact driver (hammer style) and hope for the best.

I'm wondering if i should get some heat on them too. They probably haven't been off since the pipe was put on probably when it was new.

So felt a bit ambitious, hope I don't regret it later!

So that's as far as i'll get today, need to p/u some PB or WD for the exhaust, then start looking at pulling the top end.

so i did more

Pic of some casting numbers

and some numbers written on the head

Bagging and tagging to follow.

And I had a thought, maybe if i leave the exhaust on until i get the head unbolted i could use it to wiggle the head loose, should provide a good handle and may save some hammering.

I flipped it to make it readable, may have been written on the die itself?

Leaving the exhaust on sounds like a good idea for leverage, but im wondering if the collector would get hung up on the bottom of the engine ??and it would probably make the exhaust a real pain to get the off with the head moving around and such.

Oh yeah sorry, wiggle the head loose, then bolt it back down like 3-4 nuts and remove the exhaust.

As far as I've read it's just the initial breaking free that's the issue, not the actual removal of it.

So head and jugs are loose, but not apart nor are they off yet.

Thought i'd look for something I lost a little while back, and this is why those restrictive ports are not necessarily a bad thing.

There it is!   :-[

Luckily it was jammed in the intake, not further. That's all i know that fell in there, going to soak those exhaust bolts more and filter the oil to see if there's anything interesting in it. Hopefully pics of the head off tonight.

EDIT: and buy a 3/8 drive 6mm allen tool for the silly exhaust bolts.

Maybe I'm just lucky, but my head loosened up easy too, if only the exhaust were so happy...

Oh and i picked up another Showa, this one has a remote reservoir on a flex line. $20

I'll have to see if it's worth swapping stuff around between the two, or just run it as is, the spring could use some powder.

Ok They actually look pretty good, a little scratching, a little staining, but nothing serious,

Pistons look pretty clean, don't know how.

But the gasket is all oblong, which is weird...

Opinions?
