Recognizing a New Addiction
« on: September 21, 2012, 10:18:56 PM »
Like most things I get into I tend to Jump in.....I'll let the pics explain my Cheap Craigslist, Honda SOHC4 addiction.

$400 1971 CB750K1 - Stripped of its 70's Polyester Leisure Suit (Vetter Fairing, Vetter Saddle Bags, King & Queen Saddle Seat, Back Rest & Luggage Rack)

$200 1974 CB550K0 - Brought back to life and given a dash of style after 28 years of disrespect.

$325 1973 CB350F - Someones forgotten friend, Relieved of its pretentious Windjammer II Fairing and will be getting attention now.

Did that 350F have a Windjammer, or a Quicksilver? I am looking for a Quicksilver for my 350F. And, do you still have the frame mount for the 350f?
See SOHC4shop@gmail.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

The demons are repulsed when a man does good. Use that.
Blood is thicker than water, but motor oil is thicker yet...so, don't mess with my SOHC4, or I might have to hurt you.

Good eye Hondaman,  I guess the missing Headlight/Front Turn Signals & White Repaint gave it away. Unfortunately, It had been removed before I bought it and the mount was lost.

I moved the front turn signals back and have the Windjammer on my local CL for $30 to get rid of it

The product of too much time checking Craigslist.....Yea I do think I did good or wouldn't have bought them. Too bad it costs more than the the purchase price to get them running and roadworthy.

Yes, but a low starting investment makes the restoration less painful. ;)

Yes, but a low starting investment makes the restoration less painful. ;)

True That... Not sure what I do is called "Restoration", More like Running Roadworthy and Honest. I pretty much Get the ugly off Clean and detail and focus on the Mechanics.

My quick experience now tells me count on a base of:

$40 or for Degreaser, Cleaners Steel Wool and little brass & steel brushes.

(+-) $300 to get engine running and ready. (Battery, Oil/Filter, Plugs, Carbs, Fuel Filters/Lines, Air Filter, Petcock, Cleaners)

(+-) $400 to get roadworthy. (Tires, Tubes, Liners, Cables, Chain, Brakes, Fork Seals)

So about $750 in any Non-runner / Neglected "Barn Find" Bike, Then your lucky if these items correct what may have brought it down years ago...otherwise additional expense to repair/remedy.

It does bother me that the CB750 got painted to match the Vetter Accessories,  I will probably pop for a repaint back to original Emerald green some day.

The chrome and black frame were in exceptional condition under 26 years of dirt & dust. I did trade out the front fender from a '78 750 I had parted out since it was in better shape. The "Brat" style seat i had laying around along with the weathered Tank & Side Covers fit well with the vision I had for it. The fading on the tank and side covers is the kind of thing guys try and duplicate/fake I decided to embrace it, even helping it a little, the left side was just beginning to show the orange through the black in the knee area and it looked "cool" so I helped it along, then worked the right side to match. Funny thing is after I photographed the bike I saw the "face" in the tank

I love that! I had a blue one as a kid, my first bike. You have the tool kit under the cover on the tank?  Two speed manual, top speed 42 downhill.

That's a great deal.  I've always heard bikes are expensive in AZ.

What's your plan, looks like a good candidate for a mild cafe, changes bars, lose rack, change seat?

Let me know if you want to trade that bread box filter for an air box.

What a difference a weekend can do. Since picking up the Blue '75 750 Saturday morning, it now looks like this.

I also scavenged the Lowering Shackles off it and put them on the CB550. I think they complete the look I was after.

Put them on the CB550. In addition to the lower rear, I like the Laid Out look of the shock. This all goes with the flat low  look I was after.

It rides a little harder as far as I can tell so far. I'm not a big guy so I don't compress it with my weight. Freely admit I let this one go "Form over Function"....The scavenged Lowering Shackles finish the idea/look I had for this one.

I know this all about SOHC4's ....but it is an introduction of what I'm into as well. I am particularly proud of my first real build. a SOHC2... a mostly unloved, often dis-respected 1980 CM400 kind of a retro-tech cafe racer.

I still have a few thing to finish and sort out but a roller and a day or so work from a runner.
