New accelerator pump diaphragm destroyed
« on: September 22, 2012, 12:07:37 PM »
From Parts n' More. My old one was falling apart so I ordered this replacement for $18 (+ $12 shipping!!) Popped it in yesterday and I still wasn't getting anything out of the nozzles, or through the pipes connecting the carbs. I've already thoroughly cleaned that entire circuit, including pressing out the nozzles themselves and running a guitar string through. Also proved with compressed air.

So has anyone else had this problem with these replacement parts? Is it the ethanol in the gas? Hard to believe that it would destroy the rubber so quickly, but look at how distorted the thing is!

If it's worth doing, it's worth doing twice.

It is not the diaphram causing it not to work.
It is the check ball in the bottom pump plate.

Hey Tug,
Is the rubber on the diaphragm gooey, like it is being dissolved?

If so, that's the ethanol.

Tug I have to say I have not seen one like that. I am thinking 3 possibilities. Chemical (TT) or mechanical you did not have it lined up and pinched the two parts that are separated? Or it has to be the most inferior part ever made. ??? I have had all sorts of gas in mine and never seen any thing like that. Are you saying it is only a day or two old? Very very odd.

If you don't mind me asking, how did you get those nozzles out?  Sorry to hear about the fault..

They pull out like the press in slow jets but not as easy to get back in. You have to line them up with the hole in the choke butterfly so they shoot straight.

My thoughts as well; 10% ethanol shouldn't do that in such a short time. I once dropped a rubber band in some "real" gas once, and was amazed about how swollen and gooey it was the next day.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Yeah, it was exposed to gas for less than 24 hrs. Rubber doesn't feel gooey necessarily, and once it dried out it regained its original shape. Very weird. There's only one way for it to fit in the bowl, and like i said, it doesn't move enough to have "ripped" so it must have just been a bad one. Hopefully the replacement doesn't have the same defect.

About the nozzles: Spanner1 turned me on to the fact that you can press them out. I used adjustable pliers with some electrical tape on the jaws to keep from marring anything. The jets press out, as do the brass bungs, and you can clean them and press them back in with a punch. Make sure the passageways line up upon reassembly! You'll see what I mean when you get it all apart.

And yes, I'm going to double-check the check valve to make sure it's working correctly.

So three emails over the past three days to Parts N More - no response, and there is no phone number or other means of contacting them. Sux.

crazy that it swelled up like that  :o no wonder it wasnt squirting.  did the holes in the mikey mouse ears all close up? hope parts-n-more gets back to you.
while you've got your carbs on the bench, check to see that the brass restrictors are in place inside the tubes between the accel pump squirters.  only pull the squirters out if they're clogged.  i put a nice bend in some wire to get the squirter holes cleared so i didnt have to mess with pulling them and ruining something.  compressed air and carb cleaner to spray through them helps.

ultrasonic+simple green and compressed air were the best way to clear the check ball in the bottom accel pump plate.

Response from Parts N More:

It appears that carb cleaner must have got in contact with the diaphragm. You will need to purchase a new kit.
