new paint job for the 550
« on: September 23, 2012, 12:32:10 PM »
Just got my cb550 back together after new paint.
I had the bucket, side covers, seat pan and tank hydro dipped with a carbon fiber pattern. it was then cleared with flat clear coat. From a distance, it looks like a solid color until you get close and see the carbon fiber pattern. Think I'll leave this bike alone for a while and get back to my 750f project!

What's this dipping one speaks of?
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

hydro dipping is a paint process that lays down a pattern on water. The part is then dipped into the pattern. I'm sure i'm simplifying this quite a bit but that is my understanding of the process.

Here is the local shop in Milwaukee I used.
Check out their wood grain boosa!

I wanted to do the 3m wrap but the guy I took the tank to said It would need to be seamed and didn't recommend it. The curves were too tight.

I dig it man, super clean. I actually have the 3M film on my tank, a piece about 5" tall where a typical tank protector would go (where your belt buckle hits the tank), and it's over both of my knee dents (seamless). I mention it just because my knee dents have a good size curve too them, and there was no issues whatsoever. In fact I remember them asking if I wanted to cover the entire tank. You can't see the film in the picture, but you can see the degree of the curves of the knee dents. Click the picture for a larger version.

Also, what seat are you running?

Thanks!
No project thread, sorry...
I was in such a hurry to build the bike I had no time to do a thread! I had it done in three months start to finish. I did take many photos though. I did start one for my 750f project but have not worked on it all summer! That one will fire back up soon.

sscardefield:
That 3M wrap will really flex well from what I have seen and it is what I started out wanting to do. Its the really tight compound corners that my shop said would need to be seamed. If anyone has done an entire tank, side cover, seat pan or headlight bucket without seams, I would love to see pictures.

3M makes a vinyl adhesive that outdoor display companies use on the side of trucks etc. It comes in many patterns and solid colors. I saw a race trailer wrapped in carbon fiber and it looked awesome. It can be stretched and radiused to a large degree but the company I went to did not want to do the bike parts. Too tight.

Some vinyls and plastics respond to heat by becoming more flexible to stretch or to shrink to handle concave surfaces better. Patterns get distorted by this and people with sharp eyes for detail can see this even in complex patterns. So, there are limits on the stretching or shrinking for patterned pieces.

bike looks great.... if you had the front fender and forks done it would have an apocoliptic look to it like something outta terminator 3 or something...
the only thing that i would have done different is maybe a different pattern on the seat to break it up... but thats being nit picky.... seriously nice ride
