Using a timing light, I can get 1-4 timed perfectly but the 2-3 strobes once at one position and then at another position one or two degrees to the clockwise. It alternates and I can't imagine why.

Additionally, when the light is measuring the #3 wire (haven't yet tried the #2), it fails to flash every six or eighth time.

Before we get into the very remote possibilities.........check your timing light connections...........then check to make sure the points-base is tight on the 2-3 side......If new points, check to make sure the felt is greased.....and first or last, check the true-ness of the centering bolt to the crank.......if it wobbles the slightest bit, it will give you that 1 or 2 degree difference........search for the HONDAMAN cure for the wobble.
