wrapping super sport 4-into-1 exhaust?
« on: September 23, 2012, 07:01:50 PM »
i have a CB550F with the 4-into-1 exhaust, and though ive considered swapping out the exhaust, i really like the sound the 4-into-1 brings, but i also like the style the exhaust wrappings bring and have decided to do this.. im concerned though as the super sport exhaust is so close together, is there enough clearance between pipes to wrap them all individually and reinstall them, or will a large portion of these pipes have to be wrapped together.. which i think would look very.. bad

so.. anyone wrap the super sport exhaust yet? and how did it turn out?

i think its just that if you do a search you can find examples and people asking the same question.. even exactly how much header wrap and what width you will need.

from what I have seen, nobody has wrapped them individually where the four headers come together and has just wound it around all four towards the end. Doesnt look that bad I guess,

Its also worth noting that if your chrome is still good wrapping the headers if you ride in the rain or and store your bike outside that the headers will rust much more quickly. Given the price you can get for the stock headers if they look good, I would just pick up another exhaust and wrap it... plenty of 4-1 options available.

i thought about going to a 4-into-1 that combines under the frame of the bike.. so it looks like the 4-into-2 headers from the front, also thought about going with the 4-into-2, but... id like to keep atleast one part of this bike that separates it from the standard CB550.. and the pipes is what really sets it apart...

as for chrome i honestly dont like chrome very much... the pipes arent rusted.. well besides one spot of surface rust under where the seat used to be theres no rust on this bike... but the chrome does look faded, scratched.. maybe it could all be buffed out, maybe not

ive never seen a super sport with wrapped exhaust, so i have no idea what it looks like as you described... and id take photos of mine if my digital camera wasnt currently being replaced (still under warranty)

here is a cheap decent 4-1 http://www.cb750cafe.com/products-page/cafe-parts/cb550-4-into-1-exhaust-system/

another option, and certainly the best if you want to keep the stock exhaust is ceramic coating. Apparently http://www.jet-hot.com/ does a great job at a very reasonable price... if your pipes are good enough they have a finish at is almost chrome, they also offer a lifetime warranty (i believe)

how thick is the wrap material?... and since im doing it more for aesthetics than anything else im assuming i wouldnt need very thick material at all? if i knew the thickness, i could find something twice as thick and try to wedge it between all the headers and see if it fits or not
