Honda CL125 Scrambler Engine just won't start!
« on: September 25, 2012, 05:02:17 PM »
Hey everyone, I'm new hear, and unfortunately don't have a SOHC bike.

I do, however, have a problem with my Honda CL125 Scrambler starting. I have all the components to get the engine started, but for some reason it won't even spit or pop.

1. It has gas.
2. It has spark (not a very big spark though, could that be a problem? Dull spark?) I'm not running it off the correct battery. It calls for a special Honda 6 Volt, but I'm just a 6V battery from Lowes currently and will switch it out later.
3. It has compression.
4. The choke works.
5. The carb is clean.
6. The timing is spot on (check and rechecked a ton of times using the original service manual)

Am I missing something? I come from a very mechanical family and my buddy works on Harley engines and we just can't figure this out.

Any suggestions? Things to check? I'm kick starting it.

Thanks.

Sounds like you covered the basics.
My next step would be to put in second gear and have someone push me down a big hill.
Or pull it behind a car but that is really dangerous.

This gets the engine revving and can make a big difference getting an engine going if it close to running.

The only problem with this is that push starting it isn't really an option right now. Just a frame, a motor, and a gas tank. Any other suggestions?

We soaked the carb in carb cleaner and replaced a jet. Something makes me think it's the carb.

Is it a new plug?
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

Brand new. Tried two different kinds.

When we replaced the slow jet, it did fire, but not for long. Better than nothing, I guess. Would love to get her running good.

Shot in the dark but I've heated up the plug over a gas flame before then installed in the engine. May just give it a bit of oomph.

Might as well give it a try. I'll let you know. Think the stove would work?

not sure what battery your using but i would get the correct one. If you dont have a good charged battery or the bike will not run. Also i would look at getting a new rectifier. YOu can get them at radio shack for like $5

You say you soaked the carb but did you remove all the jets so the interior passages could be cleaned?  A motor needs three things to start, spark at the right time, good compression and fuel in the correct mixture-one of those has to be amiss...Larry
