Drove a few hours to meet up with a guy and sold my 75 CB550. Made a phone call. Drove a few more hours and bought a 97 XR600R. It needs a little work. I always say dont buy a bike after dark but i didnt follow my rules. There are a few things that i didnt see last night when i bought the bike but all in all I like it and i think it will make a good bike. It was a long day. Almost 12 hours driving and I got home around 2am.

Nice pickup mate, well done! Ken wasn't interested in selling me his XR500, but no problem, it's probably too nice to convert into something like one of the bikes in your pics, so I'll look for something a bit more beat up as a start point.

I just scored a set of Marzocchi USD forks, discs and calipers in almost new condition for 220 bucks, so I'll follow your lead and build a bike from the front end back! Cheers, Terry. ;D

THis bike is way to fun for me to cut on right now. I may sell my other dual sport and then buy a different one to cut on. Took it out for a shake down. Running a bit rich.

Well at the least im going to do the front end swap. I took the triple tree down to the machine shop along with a diagram of what needs to be done to the stem to modify it. He told me around 3 hours or so at $85 an hour.  :o  Forget that. I guess ill just have to buy a pre made stem from EMIG racing for $180.

I have my 2 front tires for the swap. 1 will be street one will be dirt.



Also on the list is a dual output stator and a new headlight, taillight and some blinkers.

Jets came in so we will lean it out a bit to morrow. Also my spare rear tire came in so it will get a little more street tire and balanced tomorrow. Stay tuned.

Put on a new Rear wheel and tire. Now i have a rear wheel for street and one for the dirt. They are also geared differently for each. There was a serious hop in it that ended up being the bead lock. Once that was out the tire needed no weights.


 I was in the next town over visiting a friend. The boarder of the two being a river. On the way home i decided to take the train tracks which takes me over the river, under a major through-fair, I cross 1 road and then hop off the tracks  within a 1/4 mile of my house. I bet its 4 miles max. If  take the road is 10. Here is a map from where i get on the tracks to home. You can see the train tracks, its the red line. There are so many short cuts available to me now in the form of train tracks and canal banks. Urban dual sporting. Be ware of Bums.

the only scary part is going over the river. I played enough on these tracks growing up to know if there is a train or not but it's still a little nerve racking (as it should be) but it was fun.

bums?on a dirt bike just blast over them??they probably wont wake up till your long gone!good stuff,,i always liked the 600 engine but never the honda big four stroke frame,,im partial to the yammy tt600 frame,,i didnt like the odd size honda wheels and short wheel base,i found them too twitchy, the longer tt600 lends itself to high speed natural power slides,the honda 600 is a great bike though,,plenty of guys ride and raced them and the engine is indestructible with proper service.

I reconfigured my XL600 frame.
It's now electric with a fork lift motor.
Rides: 75 CB750F, 48 Indian Chief, 67 Triumph TR6, 63Honda CA95
          83 XL600R in CB360 Frame
          3-wheel electric tilting cycle

Ha ha, thanks for thinking of me mate! Jeff at Ace Motorcycles has got a Yamaha TT350 leaning against a wall in his shop, he wrecked it out so it's missing the seat, tank, fenders etc, but the engine, frame, forks and wheels are still there.

I reckon I could get it for a few hundred bucks, but I've got so many other projects at the moment, it can stay there until I'm ready. It'll be interesting to see if this bike sells though, I can see the value in it, I just don't know if there's a market for it? Interesting. ;D

I like the style of this kind of bike. It feels more purpose oriented then a cafe bike. But still looks cool. Ill just build one of each kind of bike so i dont have to decide on any one. Thats my take on it.

Yep, I love those big KTM Motards, and the whole Cafe thing is getting a little tired, IMHO. I think that the "Street Tracker" style bike is going to be the next big thing, and to be honest, I think they're a lot more practical than Cafe Racers. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Been trying to sort out the jets on this bike. Stock is 152/62 when i pulled the jets out today i found a 172/75. I put in a 160 main and it would not run over 1/2 throttle. I have a 168/68 in there now and ill ride it around tomorrow and see how it does. Put a new plug in and did the valves. Still have yet to check the needle height.  What do you think was done to the motor to make them want to runs such big jets?

Checked and adjusted the valves last night. Also ran the bike for a second with the covers off to make sure it was pumping oil. I rode it around today and yesterday with the 168/68 setup but i think its running to lean. Crazy!



I need to get somewhere to do a proper plug chop.

What air filter are you running mate? If it's a K&N or similar, it'll need bigger jets as they flow a lot better than OEM filters. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Not sure if it is K&N brand but it is K&N style filter. I guess maybe with the much larger diameter pipes and free flowing filter i need the bigger jets. I have been doing a lot of looking at what other people are running for jets and nobody i can find is running anything this big. Its strange.

I tried taking my muffler apart and found it is basically empty. I cant get it all the way apart but i would like to pack it with some baffling. A new muffler is around $260 for this exhaust system. If i have to get a new muffler im just going to buy a whole new setup from front to back.

The needle was in the stock location.

No worries, I didn't mention the needle because I know a lot of US-Market bikes had non-adjustable needles due to EPA nazi's. If the bike is running well with the big jets though, then I'd leave it. Yep, back that baffle or replace it, loud bikes may save lives, but your neighbors probably own guns. ;D

Im not to worried about the neighbors. Im not the only one with a bike. A few guys have pretty loud harleys. I just happen to have the most bikes on the block. I did pull the muffler apart to see what is going on. Custom job with some chicken wire i guess. I jammed it full of fiberglass baffling and put it back together. Its still to loud but im not going to worry about it right now.


My CRF conversion stem cam in so now i need to swap that out. Its going to look good with the USD forks and ride even better.


I also put the 172 main back in. After i put on the new chain and sprockets tomorrow ill ride it again and see if it is still to rich with the 172/68 setup.

I think you will be happy with the crf fork.  I have a 2004 CRF450.  It will probably be fairly stiff being set up for an intermediate rider but the forks work really well and have a lot of adjustment and a lot of aftermarket support.
