*Warning* Ubiquitous rebuild extra parts post
« on: September 29, 2012, 11:22:37 AM »
Afternoon.  This forum has been a wealth of information and has always provided a silver lining to those moments of darkness when all seems to be dissolving into bodgery.  As a lurker I always imagined my first post would be more interesting or insightful than what I am about to embark on, but instead I am humbly prostrating myself before this online community and asking:  What are these and where do they go?

In the course of a carb rebuild they appeared on my workbench, completely on their own accord.  They appear to be part of some sort of linkage, but as far as I can tell everything on the carb and rack is accounted for.  They are very small, conical on one end, concave on the other.  The static part of a socket?  I can see them fitting nicely between a spring and a ball socket.  Or is just some vestigial part?  Carburetus Appendus?  There are only two of them that I know of, or at least that is how many have made themselves known to me.

Oh yeah, the bike is a CB400/4.  Any help or suggestions would be greatly and gratefully appreciated.

Kind regards,
JSJ

They are internal bits from the carb linkage things with the adjusting screws on top. balancing the carbs will be a bugger without these. There are several in each linkage unit. The cupped end engages the ball end from the carb or the throttle assembly, the pointy end goes up or down depending on where in the stack it belongs. I think all four in a linkage are the same, if I recall correctly they go in (from bottom) cup up, cup down, spring, cup up, cup down: then on top is the adjuster screw. Each ball goes between two cupped ends.

JSJ,

IIRC, on my bike cb550, those particular bits went at the very top of the linkage under the screw cap.  The pointy end was up into the cap and the cup end was down on the ball.  If you need I can take some pics, but if you look, I'm sure you'll see where they go.
Good luck!

Cheers,
