2 month old oem clutch cable getting sticky
« on: September 30, 2012, 08:36:26 AM »
so ive got a fairly new oem clutch cable on my bike, 2 months or so, and i didnt lube it as per advice i saw on this forum.

its now getting 'catchy' as a pull it in and release. not stiff but as i release i cant do it smoothly. now admittedly ive done about 3000km in this time but i didnt think an oem cable would cause a fuss so soon?

im running clip ons but the are above the top triple (forks lowered), and the cable doesnt to me seem to be binding anywhere?

should i lube it? between this and my snatchy clutch this bikes gonna end up in a river soon unless i can sort it out..

thank

Try removing the cable and check the action, just to make sure it isn't a routing problem.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

Provided it isn't bound up somewhere, you pretty much answered your own question.  Of course you should lube it.  You knew you should have before you installed it.

OEM means from Honda?  Was it teflon lined?

Was it installed with sharp bends?

Becasue some lubes will soften the liner, I us "Dry Slide" for a lube on those that need it.  Goes on wet and flows where needed, dries out and leaves lube where needed to improve sliding action.

But, if you have small bend radius in your installation, you'll wear out cables rapidly.

Hi yeah sorry oem means honda. Had a look last night and its hard to tell if the bend radius is too tight. Not sure what it should be! But not bad points as far as i can see. I clean and oiled (dont have grease with me) the lever pivot, made no difference. Will have to find that dry lube somewhere, im in france and my french isnt great which makes it harder..

The lever isnt stiff it just has a kindof dry sqeak feel to it when i pull ir realease it. One thing i can say is that it started after i had to ride in torrential rain.

Do they have Gun shops in France?

The straighter the cable, the less resistance the inner cable has from rubbing on the casing.
In stock form and proper routing, the cable doesn't get a smaller bend radius than about 12".

In principle only the people that are entitled to. Violence is regarded as the monopoly of the state as in all civilized countries. Less toys, less prisons. ;D ;D ;D
Honda OEM cables don't like lubes. With Teflon inside there's no use for lube anyway.

Why do you think Guns = Violence?

OK, forget the violence. I think free possession of arms and the largest numbers of prisons and inmates in the world by far. Ofcourse the NRA is willing to finance all that or...
Besides all that: I will never be able to travel the USA the way I did in '73, much to my regret.

Bicycle shops also sell the Dri Slide for cables, you can look there too.

Hey you are welcome to my place any time. I have a range out to 300m. So you can relive what ever you did (with in reason) in 73. I will supply the ammo. It will be fun. No violence except to your shoulder with the 30-30 ;D
