Triple Tree Question.
« on: September 30, 2012, 11:07:28 AM »
Hey guys while removing parts for refurbing my tach/speedo, much to my surprise i found a crack in my triple tree, PO must have overtightened, thanks for that.   Anyway i read through all the previous post on here about the topic and a stock replace being hard to locate i looked at the billet unit available from dime city etc...  Question is, you cant use the stock bars with this unit?  you would have to run clip ons? is this correct or are they tapped to accept your bar clips.. ?  anyone have a stock unit for sale.? or have there been any newer developments for replacements im not seeing, most of the post i searched were older.....need some direction..  thanks

Keep looking at ebay.  They do come up.

Mine was cracked too.  I don't think welding would penetrate sufficiently.

Make some shims so that tightening the replacement upper clamp nips well just as the gap closes.

The bottom steel clamp should take most of the bike's road loads.

Mine was cracked on a K0, a normal thing. I think you should be able to find that one in a junk yard, or salvage place without too much trouble, and yes, eBay.

Be sure to use the spacers in the top clamp or it will crack again; leaving them out is the main reason these things break... And I'm not sure you want to call it "normal" for this to occur...

well, maybe not normal, but mine still had the spacers in, and both sides were cracked. The early triple trees were a little "under engineered" and it's hard to find a good one now.

What about adding a billet triple tree with a set of risers bolted onto it?  that would be basically the same as a more modern set up wouldnt it ?
