Best place/price to get spokes
« on: September 30, 2012, 04:35:26 PM »
In the middle of rebuilding my wheels and i am looking to get new spokes. It has been recommended to me by you guys for me to get SS over chromed or nickle plated (I also found cadmium plated for cheap). The two places I've found for SS spoke sets are DDC and buchananspokes but each at 115-120 a wheel is a bit pricey. I was just wondering if anyone knew of a another source?

for my K0, I got spokes here.    http://www.vintagecb750.com

Pretty reasonable. They've been on for 2 years, no issues. no rust.

Those were what I saw first but I was steered away as they aren't stainless and cadmium plated was a pretty weak plating.

No, sorry. I seem to have missed your stainless request. Chrome.

No, the vintagecb750 ones are not SS. But they look like the originals, I think, and I wasn't too worried about SS, because I figured the bike wasn't going to exposed to the elements much. I figure they'll last quite a long time.

I recently re-laced both front and rear hubs on my 76 CB550 with SS spoke from Dime City Cycles.  The fit was almost perfect on both ends.  I had to trim the nipple end on a few of the spokes on the front wheel to just provide a litte comfort they would not work through the strip and into the tube.

Did both my wheels a couple of years ago. Got one set from partsnmore and the other from sudco. Both were chrome, both reasonably priced.

The spokes from vintagecb750 fit perfect. I know spokes other than OEM can be a slightly different fit, which can be a bit of a drag.

My bikes seem to get a bit of exposure. I'm not to worried about oem look more durability and style.

For heavy weather exposure I'd go with stainless. My chrome still looks OK but crudding up a tad. And I don't ride unless the weather's good.

I want to do it right but at the best price, which is why i was asking if anyone knew of a place other then DDC or Buch's with similar quality.

I have been hunting for a while and really haven't heard/read about many places other than Buch's when looking for SS and quality.  I am going to placing an order today for mine through Buch's.  I am looking at $254 before shipping for mine, but I am lacing GL1000 wheels so my cost is a little more expensive.

$250+ is indeed retarded, and I remember reading a post a few months back where someone was pretty pissed off with their response to fitment issues they were having.  Keep us posted as I was looking into this as well and was not expecting that price tag

I'd rather go for the £30 David Silver option and change them every year if I had to, which I don't.

I've used these spokes on a few wheels.  Really nice.  Not chrome, not stainless, but looked very close to originals.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-HONDA-CB750-Part-K0-cb-750-Spoke-Nipple-Rear-/160893478695?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2575ffa727&vxp=mtr

I think they would hold up as long as the bike wasn't left outside.  If you ride and get the bike wet, I think a quick towel off (or better yet blown off with air) would keep 'em looking good for a long time.

They were perfect length, no need to trim 'em.  Both sets will run you under $110 delivered.

I've also used Buchanan's and expect for them being stainless there was no advantage.  Buch's come with oil to help with installation and prevention of corrosion.  I bet you can get the oil on e-bay or something.

Just my $.02...

Sorry to revive an old post, but just want to make sure this was the last word on budget spokes... The only option is $200+ on stainless buchanans aside from ~$50 sets from cb750 supply etc with iffy plating?  I've heard of at least one plated set (from ebay but could be the same supplier as the stuff on various cb sites) literally flaking off when being hosed off during a wash.

I'd be tempted to just drop the money on the buchanans, but they are not at all a sure thing either based on the reading I've done

have you given any thought to using oe spokes from service honda?  I used them a few times, they seem to hold up ok.   just make sure you know what year and model hubs you have.

Op here; i ended up getting the 750supply ones. They fit perfect first time, and look good. I haven't ridden on them yet but I did round off a couple nipples (my own fault not craftsmanship) and the plating is still fine on those even with the metal being smeared/stretched.
