Longer rear shocks
« on: October 02, 2012, 04:50:20 PM »
Dear all,

Are there 15'' or 16'' rear shocks from other models that will fit a sohc k4?

I recently drilled out my frame to install a 1980s CB650 swing arm. The longer swing arm, combined with stock 1974 shocks, has lowered my frame considerably. I'm trying to raise the bike back up near its stock height, but I'd like to do so as cheaply as possible.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Andrew

Yes, Progressive and others..............be sure your shock mounts are in-line........an alternative is to move the swingarm mount forward.

Pretty sure I remember seeing them on Dime City Cycles

I was looking for shorty but i'm pretty sure they have slightly over

Convert the inch length to mm online and you will have an easier time comparing them quickly

I just did a similar swap on a 750. I installed a DOHC swingarm and used early Goldwing shocks. They are about 13" eye to clevis.

Attached are 2 pics of a 1976 CB750F with a CB900F Swingarm. The swing arm is about 2" longer than stock. First pic is with CB750F shocks, Second is with the CB900F shocks. There is about an inch difference in shock length. The CB900F shocks are 14.375 (365 mm) Center to Center on bolt holes. As you can see 1 inch makes a huge difference.

Bringing this back and there don't seem to be many answers out there... I have searched.

I'm looking for some roughly 15" or 390mm shocks a swell for a build where I've extended the swingarm. Partsnmore does seem to have some massive 16" ones but they are black and red (yuck)

Are there any other options for longer than stock rear shocks that are bolt on?

Have you tried Franks Forks, he makes custom fork tubes and although doesn't mention it he might be able to help or point you in the right direction. http://www.frankmain.qpg.com/

nothing you get off another bike is going to work for you. Most of even the largest 80's superbikes don't go beyond 14.5" (14.3" for the cb900f, 14.25" for ironhead sportsters, etc). Old dirt bikes like Husquvarna's use 15" and longer (17.25") ohlins rear shocks but they are sprung for a 300lb dirt bike, not a 500lbs fat honda four. By the time you have them rebuilt by an ohlins dealer you could have purchased a new pair of ohlins.

The bigger issue here is that you changed the shock angle, which means you need a different spring rate than most OEM shocks would provide.

To that end I think your cheapest and best option is to CALL dave quinn motorcycles and order a pair of hagons to your specifications. He doesn't charge extra for custom work like springs and stuff, and hagons are an excellent shock for the money.

sorry for being off topics here from the OP quesitons, but seeing this makes me wonders if the carbs are tilted up a tad too high, make them unparalleled to the engine bottom case, or does it make any difference?  on all my bikes, carbs bowls are parallel to the engine bottom case
