throttle return slow-mo
« on: May 02, 2013, 02:42:56 AM »
Hey guys, gotta  new problem since getting the honda 350f back from service. The throttle wont return back all the way on it's own at the grip, and when it partially moves back it's in slow motion. It was just fine before taking it in for service late fall 12. I ran some cleaner and lt. spray lube on plastic sleeve close to controls, next to inside of handgrip area with no improvement shown. The main throttle cable seems fine as far as adjustments (slight play) is concerned. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Make sure the cable is routed correctly(no sharp turns), make sure the grip is not pushed up against the end of the handlebar.  If those fail, you'll have to loosen the right control, disconnect the throttle cables and lube them, polish the bar end and clean the inside of the throttle sleeve.  If all that fails, new cables...Larry

What was the service you took it in for?

Assuming routing is OK, no change, then usually someone got aggressive with the A cable adjustment which can bind it up v the B cable.

The twist grip should have free play in the idle position.

quick test.  undo the cables from the carb slide bell. actuate the bell to its fullest, and release.
if it snaps back, hard, and closes the slides all the way, its a cable/throttle sleeve issue.

Take it back to where it was serviced and get it fixed.

Simple. If you do not tell them, then they will just keep messn' up.

Any mechanic that is worth anything would MAKE SURE that the throttle is working right.

Also...  if the pull cable is fraying at the grip end (which they seem to do when 40+ years old) it causes a huge drag. If you let it go like this, it could strand (no pun intended) you. It has happened to me on 2 different bikes!

Check to make sure the throttle cables aren't over tightened at the carbs.  I was working on my 350f and took the carbs off for a cleaning.  Once i put them back on, the throttle was tight and sticky and didn't return like you mentioned.  I had over tightened the cables (carb side) and once i backed off a little, the throttle was smooth and snappy again.

Aaaannnnnnnddddddd,

If you've got bar-end mirrors that use an expanding nut inside the bar on the right side, make sure the bar is not touching the throttle slide.

Just had this happen.....again.

All the best,

Shane

Also if the rubber grip on the throttle is pushed on too far it can rub on the handle bars.
If the throttle is repositioned this can also happen.

You have to push the throttle on, then back it off 1/8 inch at least. So the rubber grip is not rubbing on the handlebars.

Also check that the "cruise assist" screw isn't screwed in/too tight. Look underneath the throttle grip on the bottom side. There's a chrome screw with a spring under it. This is a "cruise control" or throttle assist of the 70s. There's a little shoe under that screw inside the throttle grip that will press against the throttle tube area where the cable runs. The idea is that the thumbscrew will make it harder for the throttle to release, easing the load on your right hand for long highway runs at the same throttle setting. See if they screwed it in some and now the throttle doesn't wanna snap back. Unscrew it counterclockwise while feeling the throttle, then screw it in clockwise, you'll see how it works. They may have tightened it up a bit somehow.

Thanks for all the good advice. The return cable was completely off the bracket, directly above the bell connection. After that was remedied, the next issue was that there was major gunky crap between the throttle sleeve and handlebar on both the inner and outer ends. Broke it up with CRC brakeclean high solvent spray and now throttle is working awesome.
