motorcycle goggles for all-day use?
« on: October 02, 2012, 07:36:16 PM »
hey everyone.. im wondering if anyone uses motorcycle goggles often.. curious as to how comfortable the foam backed goggles would be for all day use, as a replacement to my standard eyeglasses... thought about getting some goggles with a transition lense so they can be used as sunglasses as well, and easily fit under a helmet... and if the helmet visor is polarized and blocks UV rays then the goggles would automatically go clear behind the polarized shield should i have one...

but, anyway, im trying to find a solution for both eyeglasses and sunglasses and my prescriptions too bad for wrap style frames... and another reason i thought goggles besides complete and total eye coverage with tint (no light getting through the sides or bottom) is the fact that my nose is just ever so slightly crooked i think.. you wont notice it from looking at me, but its enough to make sunglasses put more pressure on one side of the nose than the other and it drives me insane

About 30 years ago I rode daily with goggles, liked them allot, kept everything out of the eyes and got plenty of fresh air  with  that open faced helmet. The drawback was the foam, holds the dirt and sweat against your face, have to scrub around the eyes regularly to avoid blackheads.
A few Honda 500's, a few Honda 550's, a few Honda 650's, '72 cb 450, a couple 500/550/650 hybrids, and 2001 750.

Try goggles from Zenni Optical? They are cheap enough to give a shot. I use one of those Aviator goggles over my prescription glasses, which is smaller frame and cost only 10 bucks from Zenni.

i was thinking of getting something like the bobster bugeye with a photochromic lense for indoors and outdoors without having to change eyewear, and get a polarized set of lenses later for when i need that extra protection for other activities, such as fishing and skiing where theres more glare and just toss my old fashioned eyeglasses...

see, because of the nose issue that uneven pressure is SOOOOO annoying, and with wire eyeglasses which have the nose pieces supported on the arms, which are adjustable for fit, i tend to bump my face on something and suddenly they just dont fit anymore... sunglasses seem to be a waste of time as they never offer complete coverage, and once you get a little sunlight behind the lense they render sunglasses more of an annoyance than anything

my only question is, how comfortable are the goggles to be worn 16-18 hours a day everyday?

Wore goggles for years till I set them down after road testing a bike and some one else liked them to, tried to get a new set from England like the old ones and discovered that I couldn't get them for a reasonable price any more, so had to use plastic ones, not good, and was always leery about full face because of sneezing, finally went with full coverage, think now that the goggles were better.

nothing like a sneeze to splatter the inside of your face shield with i guess... i dont like full face helmets so much because i do wear glasses, and usually have to take them off to put the helmet on... i think i might order some goggles online.. maybe get some vintage style goggles if i can off ebay or amazon and see how they fit and have the RX lenses made later, but i also might get the bobster bugeye for regular use, even when not riding... id like to wear them for a couple days and see if theyll end up bothering my face or not

also, since do a lot of metal work, it would be nice not to get slivers of metal in my eyes... or a couple weeks ago when i took a face full of carburetor cleaner

Red baron are great when you move  - they keep the right amount of air in and out to keep them clean.
But for frequent stops or high humidity morning rides - like Virginia - I wish I had modular helmet to flip up the visor.
I alternate them with triatlon sunglasses on hot days.

Give them a try, they are not expensive.

those red barons are fairly large... would be great for an all day motorcycle goggle, however, im looking for something i can also wear when not riding a motorcycle, when im sitting at a computer, watching TV, working on the bike.. heck, should be durable enough to fall asleep in them if im really tired
