Winter "to-do" list for the Honda?
« on: October 04, 2012, 08:56:21 AM »
Anybody else have a to-do list they're waiting for winter to tear into? At the moment the weather has been fantastic here in the Pacific northwest and I am too into riding to be wrenching. Although the bike needs some attention it still runs and rides fine. This is kind of the opposite of "What did you do to your bike today" thread.

First on the list:

Clean the carbs again. I've noticed the bike getting harder to start and warm up. After seeing what E-10 fuel does after sitting just a couple of weeks I assume the pilot jets are getting clogged. It runs fine once warmed up. I just did a basic tune-up: new plugs, points, timing, valves, cam-chain tension. So a complete carb cleaning is in order when the weather is too crappy to enjoy riding.

Second:

Front end tear down. Fork seals are leaking. Lesson learned on aftermarket crap. It will be OEM next time. And while I have the front end a part I plan on taking the rotor in to be drilled and surfaced a bit. And new pads. And if I can find a front fender in better condition than mine I will replace that too.

Third.

One last oil leak from under the chain cover. So far I've replaced the shifter shaft seal, the output shaft seal, so the only thing left is the oil pump seals. I have the o-ring set just waiting for the time to put them in. That will be during the next oil change.

And that should that, winterize it and wait for next spring.

on the 550:
- fork rebuild
- install tapered bearings
- electronic ignition (or maybe HondaMan, still on the fence)
- brake caliper rebuild (new piston, no big deal)
- clean + rejet the carbs
- new brake lines

on the 750C i'm doing a full teardown/overhaul.  aside from the standard painting/polishing:
- finishing front wheel swap from comstar to spokes w/ dual disc
- tank liner
- carb rebuild
- fabricating some additional custom parts
- full brake rebuild (rebuild calipers, replace lines, rebuild MC)
- etc etc etc.

yep:
on the list..
engine....RTV was used by the PO, so teardown is needed, eventually.
new gaskets all around - valve cover gasket leak over #3 - stripped valve cover bolt needs helicoil.
dual front rotor setup/forks/trees.  have rotor(s) cross drilled.
(cant figure out why my bars continually cant to the right. ive tried everything)
lossa/coneeng reverse cone muffler.
HID headlamp conversion
trim rear fender shorter, rotate up under seat, new(brighter) brake light.
vinegar tank treatment, new fuel tap.

motor starts well and runs like a champ, except for the slight valve cover oil leak and the RTV gasket material showing.  i dare not pick it out as its probably holding me together, thanks ufcking PO, whoever you are ::)  might make it another year before a total rebuld is needed.

we'll see what actually gets done...
