Never wearing my wedding ring to work again!
« on: September 27, 2012, 09:37:52 PM »
I had a .63 plate vertical and I was measuring it and I turned around for a second and the plate fell on my hand and it hurt like a sob.  I pulled my hand out and shook my hand and stuck it back in the glove and I thought how did metal get in my glove?  I emptied it out and there she was in 4 pieces.  The ring was tungsten carbide, brittle.

But morale of the story is, becareful if you wear your ring to work, its possible other types of metal could cut your finger almost off!  Lesson learned.

I stopped wearing mine after it snagged on something while going down a ladder. It cut quite deep into my finger. The same thing happened to my uncle, and tore his finger off, so I guess I was lucky.

I got mine caught in the chuck of a lathe as it was slowing down (dumb mistake), luckily it was nearly stopped.  It sliced into my finger nicely and dislocated it.  If it had been going much faster I wouldn't have a finger.  After that I never wore it till the point when I got rid of that one (wife that is).

My first ever bike accident the ring was tore off my finger, luckily it was a cheap open back ring. I've never worn a ring since.

The airforce used to tell us not to wear rings etc didn't make much difference to me until I jumped out of a wheel well and caught my ring on the sump for the mains as my feet hit the ground, stopped right after that, even after the finger healed.

goofy - it seems to me that in this case, that tungsten ring probably absorbed a lot of the impact from the falling plate.

that said, the other stories make me never want to wear a ring.   :o

Rings are dangerous for anybody who does more than sit on the couch and watch TV.  I have been witness to many ugly mishaps involving rings.  The first big fight between my wife and I concerned wedding rings.  She had worn me down to the point where I finally proposed (one of the smartest things I ever did as it has turned out), so we went ring shopping.  She wanted me to get one, too.  I said fine, but I am not going to wear it. I'll keep is on my key ring if you insist on us getting one.  She immediately assumed I didn't want one so other women wouldn't know I was married, so I explained to her about all the mangled hands I'd seen.  I even told her I didn't recommend that she wear one either, but she didn't buy it and stayed mad for awhile.  She got over it after a few days and I still kid her about it occasionally.

They are a menace...  I wore mine for 4-5 years after getting married, but having distorted the ring badly a couple of times when I caught it on equipment, I gave up and have never worn it since.  My wife was upset at first, but we've been married 31 years now, so she got over it...

I think about that many times while watching shows like "Biker build-off", where the builders wear big rings in almost every finger while pounding metal or assembling a bike. It is clear they don't do it often....

Same here Bill, I bent my wedding ring so many time when I was in the Army, I just took it off and haven't put it back on. Jewellery is for women anyway. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I agree, all of my other fingers were unharmed so the ring took all the force, that finger obviously swelled up though.  I usually don't have any problems at work with my ring, I only use a hand grinder and welder and air tools at work.  I work with my father in law and he has a gold ring and he doesn't wear his anymore either, but weld spatter landed on his ring when he was tacking and it blistered his finger under the ring.

But from now on we decided my wife will hold on to it or wear it on her thumb during the week (she works at a daycare) and then ill wear it for the weekend if she wants me to::)

The other things about rings is going across a live wire, leaves interesting damage and scars, I wear my Airforce ring now, but not when I'm doing any thing heavy and we couldn't afford a wedding ring for me when we got married also said I wouldn't wear one, there were questions but I believe after she saw I guy I worked with terrible scars she never mentioned it again.

I had a mate in the Army who refused to wear a watch Bill, he'd brought a watch with a metal band back from Vietnam, and for some reason was working on his wife's washing machine (with the power on) when the watchband made contact with something electrical, and electrocuted him.

At the same time, the band melted around his wrist and he had a watch shaped scar right around his wrist. He told me that the pain was so bad, he's wished that he died of electrocution. He died a few years later from cancer, sadly. Cheers, Terry. ;D

When my dad was 18 he was painting a barn about 15 feet up when a cow knocked over the ladder. His wedding ring hung on a nail and amputated his
finger after a 5 minute hang. He had only been married 1 week.   Through 2 marriages I have never worn one.
