last few kinks
« on: July 04, 2006, 10:33:25 AM »
I feel like one lucky son of a #$%*.  I knew nothing about these bikes (mechanically) and bought one that wasn't running on the basis that it had compression and i had this forum.  So far so good, it runs, and runs well at all stages of throttle.  but there are a couple puzzlers.

1) the idle will periodically race up to 3000 unprompted by anything at all.  a twist of the throttle brings it back down to 1100.

2) now that i got it to run with the choke down, i can't get it to start or run with the choke up.  does this mean i am running too rich all the time?  After getting it nice i replaced the dirty air filter with a new uni replacement and my valves are set at .003 and .004 instead of .002 and .003.  could either of these be causing the irregular effect of choke, which i thought made it easier to start and run.  (when i first got it running it wouldn't run without the choke up.)

these issues seem insignificant to me, but being this close to perfection i didn't want to ignore the last remaining quirks.
any help appreciated.

Have you synchronized the carbs?

2)  my valves are set at .003 and .004 instead of .002 and .003.

And you are going against manufacturers specs because...?

You should only need or require choke (lever up) when the engine is cold on start up.

Thanks TT

I am still waiting on my friend (the same guy who suggested the non-spec valve clearances) to find the adapters for his mercury sticks to do a synch.  He just moved his shop (victim of Baltimore City eminent domain) and can't find the little adapter pieces.  they are bench synched though. is this dedfinately the problem with the idle?

I have no personal reason to go against spec, but i set the valves the way he suggested and the bike ran much better.  I don't know what they were at before, so i can't say compared to what.  I will probably go back to spec if you think one of my sypmtoms could be caused by too large valve clearances.

ONE MORE possible KINK:
the bike is  A LOT noisier when the transmission is engaged.  is this normal or do I have an issue with my tranny?

Can't say definitely.  But I have cured erratic idle return by vacuum synching carbs.  Bench synching synchronizes carbs. Vacuum sync synchronizes the cylinders with variations they may have in breathing or compression across the cylinders.

I have no personal reason to go against spec, but i set the valves the way he suggested and the bike ran much better.

In theory, increasing the clearances reduces the lift and duration of the cam by some small amount.  It makes sense if you are running the engine very hot and hard, as the metal's heat expansion likely takes up the added clearance.  But, for a stock street bike, I'll stick with Honda specs., which I thought accounted for the a hot engine anyway.  The clearances are set with engine cold.  Certainly if the clearances are too large, the tappet smacks the valve stem rather than pushing on it.  This can mushroom the stem or the adjuster face, making clearances ever larger.  But, I don't know where "too large" is.

ONE MORE possible KINK:
the bike is  A LOT noisier when the transmission is engaged.  is this normal or do I have an issue with my tranny?

This may also be an artifact of unequal cylinder firing impulses due to vacuum synch issues.  When the crankshaft changes speed, the trans gears alternate which tooth face is making contact.  And, the trans "clacks" in time with the cylinder unevenness.  Gear engagement alters the mass subjected to the rotational speed change and may intensify the emanated noise.

But, then, I can't hear your engine noise either.  (Sound diminishes with the square of the distance. ;D )

TT-
you may not be able to hear it, but you can sure describe it.  I am going to hold off on posting my symptoms until I do a proper synch.  Thanks for the insight though, it is extrememly helpful.
