Rat nest of wires inside CB550 headlight?
« on: October 12, 2012, 03:20:58 PM »
Im currently in the process of rebuilding my '74 CB550 from the frame up. I am installing all the wiring and would like to clean up or modernize the wiring in the headlight a bit. I have seen people use block connectors to clean it up. Any way, right now i have a mess or wires, female and male connectors sticking out everywhere, maybe some wires missing. Where should I start? Is the block idea a good one? How address this mess? thanks

First of all, welcome to the Forum Matty. Secondly, do you have the factory wiring diagram for your particular model? You can find manuals & wiring diagrams to download on this site.
I agree, it's a mess in the bucket, however if you go grouping a bunch of wires in block connectors, I reckon it makes it harder to service the loom when the need arises. At least with the bullet connectors you can deal with just the one you may need to access. Just be sure to mate like colored wires & clean each connection before you plug em in.
Cheers.

I agree with Frosty 100%. You will be amazed at how much better your electricals will perform if you clean up all your bullet connectors, fuse holders, and battery connections (including the frame where the ground cable attaches). You can use emery paper to clean the male sides of your bullets, and I have found that a .17 caliber rifle bore cleaning brush(all gun shops and most sporting goods store have them) is small enough to get into the female ends and cleans them nicely. Add a little dielectric grease to slow corrosion if it suits your fancy, and you will have taken your wiring back to what it was many moons ago. Good luck.
