cb front end compatability
« on: August 10, 2006, 02:53:22 PM »
Hi there, I have a 550k project that I am building from the frame up.  I would like to make this bike a mix of components that I feel look good as well as preform well.

My specific question has to do with front ends.  I am interested in the dual disc front brakes and noticed a lot of talk of goldwing swaps.  I was wondering if there was a specific reason why folks don't just use the later 70's era cb750f front ends to achieve the dual disc setup.
Some of the possible issues I would assume are fork length equaling a strange stance for the 550 frame, or the triple tree of the 750 just not fitting in the 550 frame.

Any info on the subject would be greatly appreciated.  This website is a godsend.

Thanks for your time, Andy

As far as I am aware , the Goldwings had the dual-disc setup from the factory, so all the spacers and such are allready their. I guess it would be a bolt off ~ bolt off deal.
Would be allot easier than what I went thru.
::)

Could always bolt-up a newer sportbike front-end, for some REALLY good brakes  ;D
Just have those nasty newer sportbike wheels to deal with...

As far as I know the late 70's 750f's had stock dual disks as well. I have come across some on ebay and they seem afordable.  I just don't know if they bolt up.

I would think that the main reason to use a 75/76 Gl1000 front end is to update to dual discs while still maintaining spoke wheels.  The 77/78F models had comstar wheels which are a whole different look than spokes.  The dual calipers on both of these settups are a trailing type (mounted behind the fork leg) that offers a good bit better performance and a bit less weight than simply adding another stock 750k (or f0/f1) type caliper and rotor.  The GL swap gives you a factory engineered spoked dual disc setup with lightweight annodized aluminum (rather than chromed steel) DID rims, and stouter forks. For the 750 the F2/F3 front forks etc can be slipped into any years tripple trees although the F2/F3 trees mount the handlebar in a lower and farther forward stance and the distance forward/backward betweem the fork tubes and the steering stem is different (I believe shorter) reportedly improving handling so using the F2/F3 trees may be desireable.  The Gl1000 front end will fit into the 750s headstock without modification but since the GLs forks are larger diameter and wider apart, you need to use the GLs trees.  As to the 500/550s, I am not particularly experienced but there have been a couple of posts mentioning that the GL stem will not properly fit the 500 series headstock so some machine work is required.  If the fork diameter and spacing is the same between the 500s and the 750s then the F2/F3 front forks etc should mount up OK to the 500s tree's.  If not, then you are in need of machine work again.  Hope this helps.

            My Dad put a 79' CB750K front end on a 750A and i believe the early 750 front ends fit the 500/550s so, why wouldn't the 750F front end fit? Forks might be at a different angle but, not sure.  I'm working on putting the front end off of an 83' VT750C on a 77' Cb550K. That front end has larger tubes (39mm, I think), air assist suspension and dual calipers that are mounted to the rear of the legs and do not have pivot mounts. I think it'll do the job easily, after I get things all lined up.  Anybody else? Looks like there was a reply while I was typing this so, forgive me for any and all repeats. Later on, Bill

eurban that was very helpful.  It seems as though maybe I should buy a beat 750f triple tree to just see if it bolts up.
Believe it or not, i'm actually looking to use the comstars (powdercoated).  THe next issue is 750 swingarm options to get the rear comstar.  I have a lot of measuring in my future.

To put it simply,  I do not believe (based on a few posts in this forum) that the steering stem  on the tripple trees from the 750s or the GL for that matter are a dirrect fit for the 500 series.  What this means is that if the fork tubes are a different diamter or if the spacing between the forks is different than you cannot swap trees to correct the problem.  This is most certainly a problem for the GL swap but like I said, I do not know about the 750F2/f3 swap.  One other thing to consider is if you go Comstar up front, its going to look pretty stupid without a comstar in back.  So you also have to figure out how to mount up one in the rear. . . . .
