Starter Problem in my 1976 Hondamatic
« on: October 09, 2012, 12:22:19 PM »
I had my starter replaced but after cranking for a while it is still slipping.

A mechanic told me it is an issue with a gear and not a starter clutch issue.

Does anyone know what gear that would be (where on the microfiche it is located) and how I would be able to check for it out and get it repaired.

Does it crank properly sometime or for short bursts? Does the bike run and charge properly. The reason I ask is that the starter motor drives a pair of gears that turn the alternator rotor on the left end of the crankshaft and sometimes the rollers, springs and spring pins get damaged causing a failure to engage the rotor and thus the crank. There are other things that can fail like the rotor may have not been properly installed and came loose, the drive clutch in the rotor can come loose but these are very rare. The starter drive gears and clutch is on the Microfich in the alternator page. #6-7-8-9-19 part identification. Limit how long you crank any engine on the starter as they will fail from overheating. 5-10 seconds with rest in between

You are correct in your description.   The starter cranks normally for 5 to 8 seconds and then starts to slip.  I am able to get the engine to start and engine running but the problem is getting gradually worse.  When the engine is warm the problem is worse and the starter slips more.

If I need to change these parts out (6-7-8-, ...) can this be done by removing the alternator?  I hope the engine does not need to be pulled.

You don't have to pull the motor.  But you will need a "rotor puller".  There are some on ebay for about $11 - before shipping.  Search on CB750A rotor puller.

Also, see page 14-10 of the Service Manual (available on this site).

Don't forget the cover gasket.

All of the starter parts can be changed by taking off the Alt cover. The rotor needs a puller bolt once the attaching bolt is removed to get to the clutch  that is likely slipping. The three rollers need to be nearly perfect and the springs and pins are what push the rollers into the wedge part of the cage. It is a simple over-running clutch or sometimes called a sprague . These are normally very reliable so check everything carefully.

Try with your fingernail if there is wear on the contact surface of the rollers on the clutch (28110-300-000).
If there is wear then it slips now and then in the beginning, moore when the engine is hot. The worn spot hits the roller and the clutch start slipping.
A machine repair shop honed the pits on my clutch. Less than 1/10 mm! Pay attention, no shoulder on the inner angle!

Finally got my parts and removed the rotor.  When it came off the roller, pins and springs came out.  I notice the plate/cover is warped.  I guess to replace that with a non-warped one.

I assume this part is also obsolete so I need to source a good used one.
