Hi All,

Want to intro myself as a newbie.  I have just acquired a 1972 Honda CB500F for a whole $NZD100, about $USD62.00.  As you can see it has been parked under a tree for a significant number of years and cannabalised for parts like switches, master cylinder, seat, etc.  Then of course it has been dropped a number of times although the frame, forks and wheels are straight. The motor was reputed to have been running when last parked. Amazingly the tires held air! Anyway I have to decide whether to part it out or embark on the long road of restoration.  I am already subdued by the prices asked for individual parts!!!!  Of all the bikes I have previously owned the 1973 CB500F I bought new in Feb 1974 is the one I have most dreamed about all the years I was without a bike (18) and since. Already I have found a wealth of info in these forums so thank you to all who have contributed before.  I confess I will be a taker rather than a contributor for some time yet. Welcome to the group. Granted, I'm biased, but I wouldn't part it out, fixing it up would be fun. Of course, you may find something in your evaluation to change your mind, but if you do, then you can part it out. Good luck. Keep us posted.

I'd tend to find another 500 in a more complete state and then build one bike out of both.  You'll spend more on parts for this bike than another donor bike would cost.  Based on your signature you've got a few other toys to keep you busy too.

Welcome to the site.
I see you have  a BDM bike..
I used to sell those things, great bike for the money.
I have since switched to darkside, where I can have a complete bike(My Honda) that I wont see everyday for the same price as one BDM (BigDogMotorcycles) Wheel... ;D

I guess it is a matter of what you want to do with it. Somewhere there is another that is missing the opposite parts so you can make one killer bike. Not only would just going out getting one that is perfect and neglecting that one send yet another bike to the grave, it would take out all the fun of putting one together. If you can find another one you can do the nobel thing and save atleast one more of these bikes from the grave.  ;)

I am inclined to agree.  Urgent need is for gas tank, side covers, instruments and handlebar switch assemblies.  Oh, and a gear shift lever, I am reluctant todestroy the spline with vicegrips  ;)

Hell you were'nt based in Florida were you? Bin looking for that dude ever since!  seriously, love the bike to bits and got a lotta fixes out of BD before it was right. Took 3 years.  Got 27k miles on it, nearly all in the USA.  Gonna have it mounted on a plinth in my hallway when i can no longer ride  8). Can't beat the Honda tho for knowing what you are going to get each time you climb on board.  With the BD it is always a mystery and a surprise.
