Topic: Hello Bonneville! Sept 3rd (even better!)

Ok, not the 3rd, but just missing the boat. I'm riding out to LA to meet a buddy then heading to Yellowstone. I was all juiced up to be in Bonneville on Sept. 1st to catch the tail end of the BUB, but found out a 3rd buddy is meeting up with us too late for us to make it in time.

So I guess we'll be there a couple days after the racing ends. Will there be anyone on the salt hanging around? I know there is some racing going on in the middle of the month a couple weeks later.

And for God's sakes, can I ride out on the salt when there isn't any racing going on?

Yeah you can ride out there.... HOWEVER.... it will KILL your scooter... seriously... the Salt will destroy it all....

If you have to do it.... spray Chain Lube on EVERYTHING and wash it off slowly without a pressure washer.... ( it pushes salt into places it's not )....

I've been telling everyone I know that I'm going to build a racey 550 and do 120 on the salt in 2011 or 2012. I've already set the wheels in motion gathering up parts, but this trip fully cemented the goal for me. It's gonna be tough, I was beating up on 95mph. Gotta coax at least 25 more mph out her!

Finding 25mph is posible, finding it at Bonneville will be a nightmare, the altitude will cripple it.
Do some test over the standing mile at Texas or Maxton to give you an idea of the performance.

What track in TX? I'm familiar with Maxton, that's a ways from here. I was figuring on county highways out in the country by my grandparents for testing. But I'm guessing there'll be some major jetting differences for altitude.

I've got a basic outline for the bike: 650 head, maybe crank, fairly aggressive porting, 750 carbs/possibly pistons, hot cam. Aluminum wheels (stock hubs), no front brake/disc, race battery. I want the average guy to look at the bike and think I'm running a mostly stock 550. Stock seat/tank with side covers. This is my guess at the minimum to hit 120 up there, and probably just barely.

The Texas mile is nearest, and you will get more accurate speed reading than what you will get from your speedometer.

Am I reading this right; Div A, type 1, class 8 - Unstreamlined, naturally aspirated, 500cc, record 98mph? Seems like a nasty cb500 could take aim at this record.

interesting..... dont have radar or gps readings, but by rpm (electronic tacho), my 61 rwhp race 500/4 hits 120mph in tracks with long straights. how much speed will boneville kill off that? sounds like not so hard to beat record, go for it!

Depends on the week , sometimes it is only 10-15  percent others it is an easy 25 %. We ran a Triumph flatty there in the 90's and set some records . Derek Anderson Racing . It is a harsh sum #$%* .  Red
