Cut n Weld day ....

Did a little fabrication on my cafe CB ...





the rear set section is high for 2 reasons, the first being the bike will have an undertail exhaust.  Number 2 it is going to have just a seat cushion not a bubble.  This bike is the anti bubble cafe racer!  Also bear in mind the tire will sit higher with shocks installed to proper height, right now the swing arm is sitting low.... Let me know what you think.  Hate on haters  ;D

Think.

It will cause all kinds of problems with the SOHC engine.

Heya Warwick good to see you back. Its hard for me to tell what it is going to look like. Will there be 4 pipes coming out back or just 2. Also how will you route them to come up from the engine to the tail section. Should be a fun project keep us updated..

Its a cb350 twin shhhhhhhhhh dont tell anyone, it will be 2 into 1 with one pipe routed up the left side frame then tucked underneath the upper seat.  Ill keep posting pics

Man, undertail exhaust, twin cylinder... you're gonna get slagged!  ::)

Be curious to see how this turns out, I love the idea of the higher p-pad to act as the bumstop- should still give you that cafe look and feel, but with a second seat. Good times.

Lucky, what kind of problems would an undertail exhaust cause an SOHC engine - and why?  i'm not sure i see why routing the exhaust differently would cause problems.  please explain?

@mono, there are people on this forum that believe these bikes will never run reasonably well without being completely bone stock.   I laugh at those people.  Is it easier to make it run right, sure, but where's the fun in that

Really! Blunt ended statements of pseudo fact do nothing to further the discussion. Give a reason or withhold the comment.

Personally, I see no reason why it would cause a problem any more than any other homemade exhaust might. Flip a coin, could actually be an improvement. Certainly solves a ground clearance problem.

Hater???/  It does NOT have to have stock exhaust but just not up high for this particular engine. Most of the bikes that have high exhausts in the rear was for a very good reason. They had V4 engines OR V twin engines and the rear cylinder exited the rear because IT MADE SENSE.

Not really . I just am trying to save you a lot of hell.
Carry on floppy ears!!  LOL.lol

BTW.... some old timers have some information that is very helpful.
If you listen to some old timers you may save time ,money, pain and frustration.
Also OUR generation got you all the modern luxuries you now enjoy. We got us to the moon. WE made the airplanes, We made the trains, We built the freeway system. We made the first phones that worked perfect and clear as a Bell.

That example bike already looks like the riders leg and a$$ got hot, and the shift lever linkage is all bent up.
Just think if that pipe exited down low then no hot a$$ and no hot leg, and the shift linkage would get straitened out.  See what I mean.

Think... why do you want the exhaust out the a$$ up high. Why??

heat shields will save his a$$ and his legs.
changing the exhaust route will not change the function of the bike.

That's better. So its not a performance issue, at least so far.

I'd agree there are often design compromises, heat and controls, with the high under seat pipes. But for many bikes, Ducatis, Hondas, etc. production under seat pipes are no problem with heat or controls. usually V-twins or 4s though. So I'd like to see what they come up with.

For a track bike, its a great thing.

All of the big 4's late model transverse 4 crotch rockets have underseat. Whether it's your thing or not, it works, and well. SOHCs do have the compression to hurl those heavy exhaust gasses uphill also, even defying gravity.

Wait. When did we start caring about how mods affect comfort or performance on this forum?  :o

Cafe/customized bikes are some of the most uncomfortable things known to man. They make the seat a vinyl covered piece of metal and put it as far back as possible. Then, you remove all baffles and possibly eff the pipes all up and make it loud as hell and destroy the calculated backpressure (because nothing is quite as cool as hearing damage). Next, you put some big-ass ugly tires that will probably put you on your side the first chance you get. Of course, you also have to cut the back fender off (and maybe the frame) to get covered in mud and road-oil if it ever decides to sprinkle. Finally, you replace the handle bars with something that will allow you to put your hands as close to the front axle as you possibly can. Don't forget the pods either (but that is another thread).

So, you end up with a bike that wasn't fast (nor was supposed to be, its 40 years old...), now runs rough as a dirt road, sounds like a war zone, is as comfortable as riding on a rail, and possibly lacks basic road-worthiness equipment.

But it looks awesome. It's a piece of art straight out of your imagination. People give you respect cause they can't dream of have the technical knowledge or creativity to make it happen. Nobody calls you a moto-douche or lumps you in with the obnoxious squids on the highway. Nobody thinks you are an 55 year old account in midlife crisis (Harley's anyone?). Everyone turns their head, the chicks dig it, and you look like a total badass when you roll up.

If you want performance, go buy a BMW R1000s or something. For comfort, get a Goldwing. For bling, a Harley. But for style points, make a custom bike.

Carry on with the undertail exhaust. Even if it makes your seat hot, people pay a lot of money for an evenly tanned butt.  ;D

My 2003 CBR 600RR had an undertail exhaust. They are of course DOHC I4s ... but I will have you know it worked very well and I was never burned by it.

110hp in a 400lb ... man was it fun!
