I love the controversy I have started, muhahahahaha...

Cant wait to see how people respond to the graffiti paint job. 

Nextly, how do you feel about honda's cl exhaust Lucky?    Does this not have a similar heat shield concept? 


I will be posting more and more as #$%* gets done.  Right now the motor is being bored out at bore-tech, and I am waiting on valves from david silver spares. 

In regards to comfort... this bike will be about as comfortable as my SV650s... that thing is like sitting on a 2X6.  For those who dont remember my last build I made my own seat.  You can seach the forum and see step by step how I did it.  It was pretty damn comfy.  Hate hate hate, I feed off the hate and lack of understanding.

Why not just come in, say "Look, I'm modifying my frame and exhaust in this way"

Of course there will be people in life questioning what you do. And instead of sounding like a 15 year old douche with the haterz crap, just explain why you did it, listen to peoples opinions, and go from there.

Just need to run out and buy some more 1" tube and add a couple gussets and it will be basically ready for grinding then sandblasting.

James, I am just so used to catching flack on here I figured I'd start with a bit of a joke in regards to haters.  I do find the back and forth debates interesting though.  I think controversy sparks good debates and useful information generally comes out of it.

Ooh, have you considered flaring the exhausts out to the sides under the seat? Like the old Mustangs? That could be whacky cool, and would work with that high seat.

i think it's great when people go way outside the box and take non-conventional approaches to builds.  yes it's a risk and yes there can be problems, but the creative solutions that come out of this problem solving are what create innovation.

if you don't say f*ck it and do what you want to do, you just end up with some more cookie-cutter sh*t.

what if everyone told HondaMan "hey dumbass, the points were designed by a team of highly-trained genius japs and have been working on combustion engines for 50 years just fine the way they are!!"

@ dusty. if you look at the exhaust set up that inspired me (i posted a pic) they DID route it out the side.  I agree its totally bad ass.  I decided to go straight out the back so I could gusset the rear seat, and keep it open frame.  I wanted to make it so the final product would have exposed framing with just seat pads sitting on top.  I think it will give it a modern feel while still keeping some vintage attributes.

I'm not a real fan of cafe racers but that just my personal taste, I do enjoy seeing people take something and create their own thing. I'm always able to appreciate the time and attention to detail some people put into a project. Your bike, do you're thing!

I see your point, though, straight out the back would be cool too. Looking forward to what's gonna happen here, creativity is seriously underrated.

Lucky, I never answered your question.  I want an undertail exhaust because I think it will look awesome.  I like things that are different.  We have all seen the bubble seats with the reverse cone pipes, havent we?  How many 70's Hondas or other bikes from that era, have you seen with an udertail exhaust, or a custom seat pan that wasnt a bubble or a flat brat style seat?  I have only seen a couple.  I dont claim to be an innovator, I have been inspired by other people's designs. 

As far as the "issues" I dont see why an undertail exhaust would cause anymore problems than any other exhaust, with less back pressure than stock.  I am not a fan of super loud, so I may try and incorporate some kind of baffle in the pipe somewhere.  In regards to heat, with the amount of sheet metal that will be there, with air gaps inbetween I doubt very much there will be a hot seat.  I think the heat shields will suffice around the leg area.  If not I can heat wrap it as well. 

Obviously, as stated before, there will be compromises.  The shift linkage comes to mind.  No doubt it will be an annoyance, but surely it can be made to work.  It's not like I intend to track this bike or even ride it super hard.  I have a modern bike that I use to go fast and even it isnt a rocket.  This bike is mean to be ridden to and from work.  To go get coffee and maybe a beer, and most importantly to get people talking.  I miss the amount of conversation my 550 would strike up.  I know this bike will surely get people talking.  Like it or hate it, it will be different. 

Lastly, after re-reading my previous posts I felt like I portrayed an attitude that I didnt intend to.  My hater comments were meant to be funny but I dont think they came across that way.  I use this forum for fun and dont want to offend anyone.  Thanks for viewing

I was a mechanic at a dealership when that model was introduced.
My first bike was a 305 Super hawk with scrambler pipes.
The scrambler pipes had 3 less horsepower than the down low road pipes.
I  got burned on the leg many times (even with heat shields) until I finally learned to wear long pants.
Also the up high pipes made it a real b#@$ to mess with the carbs.
Left side cover access also problematic.(see photo below)
It was Tucson and 112ºF in the summertime.
Then I learned to wear gloves and a helmet. I bought one of the first Bell Star full coverage helmets.

A Bell Star helmet saved my life one night at a dirt track race in Vallejo ,California.
I won (1st,2nd, or third) in over 56 AMA dirt track races in Arizona and California.
BTW the bike in the above photo has modified stock style exhausts.

if you want an under seat exhaust, cut and extend the swing arm 6" and then run the pipe in the space created between the tire and the swing arm.

Now watch the purists freak ... seriously though, I'm looking foreword to your progress.

I'm not sure which is dumber: wearing shorts on a motorcycle with high pipes in the first place (seriously, wtf did you think was going to happen?) or getting burned "many times" before finally figuring out that long pants was perhaps the right idea all along  :o

i would like to see an example of hammered knee dents (hammered into a stock tank) that was done without the surface looking peened afterwards.  i'd like to try this by filling the tank with sand 1st, but i don't have an extra tank.   you should give it a whirl.  ;)

its funny, i guess everyone has something that just rubs them the wrong way... they made a ton of these bikes, despite that cutting up the frame does make me wince a little.. but in the end what your doing is still cool. But then when I see you got rid of the paint on the great looking tank!! Just buy one thats already been messed with and sell yours for more! Or especially in your case, given what you are doing to the bike I am really surprised you are even keeping the stock tank.

That is the one thing I simply dont understand, the stock paint on these bikes was awesome no matter how faded or worn they got. Which is to say no matter how far I go with my build I will never touch the paint... i just dont see a reason good enough to. If there is only one thing that is getting erased from history with these bikes its original paint..  oh well, in all though I wish you the best!

 A hard wooden box just the right extra width, the sand in the tank, the old style thick red hot water bottle, and some pressurized air or water... stick the tank in there with conformed stiff foam on the one side, align the expandable water bottle on the other and pump in the (controlled) pressure.
 Instead perhaps a body shaping metal, a hole centered to the knee area horizontally through the box, then a rod and small bottle jack - pump that preform right into the side of the tank. Some mapp gas heat applied right before might yield perfection and smoothness.

what may have appeared as good paint wasn't, it was incredibly faded and had basically no clear coat left.  I was tempted to sand it a bit in spots and make it look a bit like the fender road worn guitar series but I decided to go another route. 

Let me explain something.  I bought this bike for 250 dollars.  It had a seized motor, seized brakes front and rear, a bent frame (I replaced it with a CL frame that was straight) ... and so on and so forth.  If I am going to go to the trouble and expense to rebuild this thing I am going to do it in a way that brings me gratification.  Personally, these bikes have no nostalgic value to me.  I wasn't alive when they came out.  I dont have memories of rides in my teenage years on one of these machines.  I appreciate a lot of the engineering in these bikes but like its been stated they made hundreds of thousands of these bikes.  Lets face it I saved this bike from rotting away in some guys back yard.  Who cares what I do with it.  Why does anyone get offended by what someone does to their own bike? I dont get it.  If its done with skill and not unsafe or poorly built I say do whatever makes you happy. 

In regards to paint, I plan on doing white base with graffiti in black with red highlights.... most people on here wont like it and thats ok.  These are the things that make the world go round n round.
