I think they just push back on, at least when I first did mine they did.  I now have electronic gauges and love them.

Ah, I see the Link to Speedhut in your signature for the electronic gauges. Those GPS units are sweet - kinda pricey, but cool as heck.

There is a link to a full write up on how to do them in my signature, I used some of the crappy repro chinese gauges for the bodies and fitted 3 3/8" speedhut gauges to them.  I looked at the GPS unit but opted to get the standard one for a little less money.  I then used a speed sensor off a VFR750, I had to thin the body of it 0.1" so it wasn't too tight in my forks.  I tried a speed sensor for an acewell that plugs into the standard speedo drive, but it didn't work.  The gauges cost me just over $300 shipped to Australia, the speed sensor cost me nothing because the local bike wrecker owed me a favour.  Then there was just the time to fit it all up.  I reckon for the results it was well worth the money.

Here's how I do it: start the needle slightly in advance of zero and, as you gently push the needle down onto the post, rotate it back toward the zero mark. The mechanism has an internal stop that will hold everything in place. With the needle on the zero mark, just gently push it on the rest of the way.

Do everything slowly and carefully and you should be good.

Agree with SohRon.  I pushed it on slightly with needle at zero.  I pulled the needle around and let it flop back to zero and had to re-align until I got it to always come back to zero and then pressed it on.  You will feel it press on and seat.

I would say no!  You typically would use a fork placed between the tangs to pry up on the needle to get it off and usually the needle goes flying as you have to pry up with allot of pressure.  If the pivot post came out with the needle not sure what happened or how the pivot post is secured into its base, might be glued in or pressed in.  There must have been allot of corrosion at the needle to post interface on your gauge.

There is a guy here on the forum, I think from England who rebuilds these gauges.  He is more than happy to help if you have questions and I'm sure he has done what you did as he seems to have rebuild many many gauges.  I had sent questions to him when I was doing mine and he was helpful.  Here I went and found the contact (peter horton [peter@harptree7.freeserve.co.uk]).  Was very helpful.  Tell him the guy in Phoenix sent you!!
