Question removing kick starter gear from case
« on: October 12, 2012, 10:38:48 AM »
I just split my cases on my FO motor, and am having trouble removing the kick starter gear assembly. The roll pin which retains the gear shaft will not budge. Is there a problem leaving this in the case (doing a full rebuild) for cleaning/assembly? I don't want to ruin the pin, and possibly still not get it out of the case. Any suggestions on getting it out?

Many threads on this subject. I covered it in my build thread, though that's been a few years.

No prob leaving it in if all your doing is solvent tank cleaning. Must be removed for glass beading.
Its really not hard once you get the trick.

Reinstalling the spring and pawl is another trick.   ;)

Thanks for the help. I haven't seen this particular problem on the builds I've followed, until now. Semi-computer illiterate, so i haven't done a build thread on my own cafe project. Just follow other peoples builds for the info available.

Not many people remove that pin. Besides myself, I can count the threads on one hand. Besides bead blasting, I replaced my kickshaft with a one that was shot-peened and cryogenically treated against breakage.

RC Engineering used to sell one that was shot peened and heat treated for their Cobra Motors, or any motor you wanted to put it in.

I looked into heat treating, but it was too expensive, so i went cryo.
