Engine Compatibility
« on: October 14, 2012, 05:58:20 PM »
I just picked a 73 cb750 roller. Plan on doing a VERY long term cafe build. It will likely take years as I don't have the money or expertise to do it quickly. I have a nearly stock 73 to ride around on as I'm building, so I'm in no hurry.

I will be back a hundred times for advice and parts, but my first question is what years engine will be compatible with a 73 frame? Not planning on picking one up too soon, but if something comes up I'd like to be able to grab it. Since I'm in no hurry to get this done I'm kind of looking forward to rebuilding one; should I be overly concerned about mixing and matching parts?

Thanks for the help and I'll start a buold thread when it gets to that point.

'70-'76 will bolt in, no prob. '77-'78 will too but the front sprocket size is different and you'll have to mod your rear wheel (not the end of the world).
A K1 would be ideal.

Good info, thanks. What makes the 71 ideal?

They have the most HP!  Honda detuned them in later years to meet EPA standards. And the valve guides seem to last longer. But, they are all good motors. I had a K5 with 60K miles and still ran good.

Can never complain about more HP... Those will get priority as I'm kind of looking around over the next couple of years.
