Time to freshen up the F Model bracket bike

Well, it seems the rest of the Sam Green Racing Team is making progress on their SOHC bracket bikes in anticipation of the upcoming Manufacturers Cup race. Just so i don't get left out or kicked off the team, i decided it was time to pull my F model bracket bike out of the corner and blow off the cobb webs so i can fix the transmission where its been jumping out of gear and them freshen up the motor. Bill got on my case about the tranny today so i know its past by time to get it right. I guess he doesn't want me to embarrass the team when it pops out of gear during eliminations.

I took off all the body work, covered up the megaphone and the carbs, sprayed  the dust and grime away with degreaser. I rolled it back in the shop, raised it up on jack stands and now i'm on my way.   Its been about 8 years since i've been inside the motor so its past due.

I also plan to take some weight off the bike by removing those heavy stock wheels, rotor and calipers and install light weight aftermarket rims, rotors and calipers. Will replace the heavy 630 chain with a lighter 530 chain to reduce the reciprocating weight also. The bike weighed in at 465lbs the last time i put it on the scale. I'm hoping to take about 20lbs minimum off the bike with the changes. Should be good for almost a tenth reduction in ET but we shall see.

Will try to post pictures of my progress later.

Frank,
     What are you using for the clutch? If you're going to run Street ET, no slick, no wheelie bar. That puts a lot more stress on clutch finesse. Heavy clutch springs make the clutch discs last, but they make the launch much more challenging. How do you slip an on/off clutch? Can you get consistent 60' times with yours? I've played with a lockup on my stock wheelbase GPZ1100 this season with a lot of good results. Since the clutch lever still launches the bike, it should be legal for Street ET. Just a thought for the future. It's given me a lot more confidence with 7k + launches not worrying about the front end coming up. I'm getting too old for weather forecasting... ;)

Jon, i'm taking the 18" Mickey Thompson slick off the back and putting a light weight 17" wheel on so i can have a better selection of sticky street tires. I've tried a lot of 18" street tires but could never get one to hook because of the length of the bike, the gearing and the launch rpm's.

The bike was never built to run wheelie bars. Hence the reason its so long and low to the ground. Its got a set of worn out stock Honda shocks on it but they let the bike squat before it picks the wheel off the ground. The stock swingarm was extended about 11"s over to help keep the frontend down and i raked the frontend slightly. I'm like you- too dang old to be weather forecasting.

I use heavy duty clutch springs and the stock F model clutch pack. When i used to race this bike regularly, my average 60' was a 1.45. The last few outings, my 60' dropped back to high 1.40's to low 1.50's- i suppose i'm not as young or aggressive in leaving the line as i once was and i'm trying to  conserve the bike somewhat. All in all the bike has always had consistent 60' times if i race it enough to stay in practice. Lots of clutch and throttle management due to the fact that i run 36mm Mikuni Flatslide carbs. Yep, way too big but its what i could get my hands on when i first built the bike. 34's would have been more ideal but no one had them in stock when i needed them 17 years ago. They are raked for an FJ1100 but the spacing is very close to the SOHC. I offset ground the boots to make them fit.

The bike will be 100% street ET legal per the Cup rules when i'm done. If i had a delay box on the bike i'd leave the slick on and run it in pro ET but with most of the guys running bar and slick bikes and cutting consistent .00X lights, why bring a knife to a gun fight.

Oh, i'd love to have one of those CYCLEX lockup clutches but at their asking price, its not worth it for me based on the amount of racing this bike will see. I asked them about lockup clutches about 10 years ago and they didn't make one then. If i inherit some extra cash in the future, i might throw one in there to see how much it improves my 60'.

Ok, i got the pipe and  carbs off. Decided to keep going and took the cam out and the head off. Will drop it off to the local machinist to get a valve job done with some new HD springs. Would love to replace the stock F valves with some of those new CYCLEX super flow valves but not sure if it'll be worth the money in performance. I might just have my guy do a bit more port work if its possible. Will pull the block off tonight and order some rings from MTC. Hopefully they still stock the size i need. Need to get with Cometic about making more copper head and base gaskets and then plastiguage the rod and mains so i can order new bearings. The tranny will also go to the machine shop so it can be undercut. Don't want it coming out of gear in Valdosta.

I took pics but couldnt get the camera to download. Sorry fellas but you just have to take my word on the progress i've made so far.

Going in the shop in a few minutes to finish taking the motor off the chassis. I need to split the caes tonight so i can get the tranny to the machinist to undercut the gears.

Thanks for posting my pics for me Bill. Not sure why i always have a difficult time getting photos on this site. I took a few with the wifes camera tonight. Will get her to email them to me and post later.

The motor is now out, then head, cylinder and pistons are off the motor. Removing covers now. Will split the cases and pull the tranny out before i go to bed tonight. Running out of time so i need to get the head and tranny to the machine shop tomorrow if time will allow. Got most of my parts in except the bearings- will plastiguage those on the weekend and go to the Honda shop to order new ones. Keeping my fingers crossed on putting it back up in the next few weeks.

Thanks Bill. Yeap, the shop is still unorganized but as least i'm getting something done to the Honda finally. Motor out and apart. That wheel is a front PM Chicane i plan to put on the bike. The stock Comstar is heavy as heck and has duel rotors so i'll be shaving off a decent amount of weight. I need a matching rear PM Chicane if anyone has one. Needs to be a 17" wheel.

Quick update. Dropped the head and transmission off today to the machine shop to get them freshened up. I also took one of the pistons so i could get confirmation on the ring pack style. Its been at least 10 years since i last freshened this engine up and i've misplaced my parts notes. I got the last set of rings from MTC so i'm hoping they can hook me up again. .


Umm, that cylinder block in the pictures above is not from my motor. Its from the engine Jim F gave me and is an 836cc block. Mine is a tad bit bigger and is o-ringed. It also has external oil drain back lines.

Time to do plastiguage calculations tomorrow so i can order some bearings from the local honda shop.

 Bill, nice PM Chicane wheel ....can I have it? Think that was their name, they were actually Mitchell wheels. Roger Goldammer runs a front one, it's pretty light..

When i took my sidewinder off i found that 2 of the 4 pipes were cracked almost full circumference. Time for a new one. Anyone knows of a vendor with a good price on another CB1100F Vanes and Hines??

Yes sir, thats what i need. Mainly that small moon looking piece that locks the kick start lever in place when you push down on it fails on my bike and the kick starter just slips. Its hard a heck kicking that thing and the small part just can't take the resistance but so long. I wish i could find someone to make a hardened piece.

Bill, let me know what you want for the whole assembly. In fact if you have two, i'll buy those from you. Will give you my address.

I found a PM chicane rear wheel today from a shop up in Lancaster. Brought i home and lucky for me the stock axle slipped right through. I mounted the rim on the swingarm, centered it and it looks like the arm is more than wide enough. While centering the rim, it began to rotate very slowly, as it spun i would hear an intermitent scrape against something on the arm. Closer investigation at a faster rotation revealed that the side of the wheel was periodically touching the side of the chain guard. Damn, the rim is bent laterally. A quicker spin of the rim and a fixed pointer in place revealed the rim was also out of tolerance radially also. Crap, just my freakin luck. I finally found the rim i've been looking for to match the front and it fits in the arm just right but its turns out is warped and bent and is unusable. Called the seller up and he was apologetic and agreed to refund my money.

AND, now the search is on once again for a 17" rear PM Chicane wheel. Time is not on my side. Might have to settle for putting the slick back on and running pro ET without a delay box against a class 95% full of delay box equipped bikes. Can you say first round buy back??

Did you check out the Kijiji ad??  It's in Canada, but you could have it there in about 6/10 days (or less for more shipping cost).  Have the seller get the tire removed to save shipping weight, and checked for true.
