Topic: Time to freshen up the F Model bracket bike

Look Bill/Sam, I got new air shifter parts. Getting the new tire mounted on the rim today and I hope to set the motor back in the chassis this evening. With any luck i'll be able to start it up tomorrow and then go testing afterwards. If that doesn't work,  i'll be out someplace sunday looking for an open dragstrip. Worst case, i'll be on the street in front of the shop doing a burn out and then make a short blast down the road testing the tranny and the air shifter.

After putting in a new center shift fork and a shift drum, I finally got the motor back on the F model friday night, finished up the installation on saturday afternoon and installed my new airshifter parts. Cranked the bike up, it idled fine and had no oil leaks. Loaded it up in the trailer and headed out to a local track for a bracket race just to get some testing in and hang out with a few friends. Made a shakedown run to verify the bike would shift. Bike got my attention real quick when i released the clutch a little to fast off the launch and it immediately went into a wheelie- WTH? I never got out of it so the bike simply glided out and gently touch down. I went to plug  the shifter but it jumped out of 2nd, hit it again and it stayed in and shifted through the rest of the gears. Got the time slip and it still ran a 6.93@99.53 with all that crap going on with a 1.54, 60'. Check the chain in the pits and found it very loose. Okay, that explains it jumping out of gear- i hoped. Realized the washers on the axle nut where not going over the tapered which keep my from actually tightening up the axle nut. Found a few larger diameter washers and put them on, tightened the chain and snugged the axle bolt. 1st official time run, i'm having issues finding the ideal spot and get the rpms for the launch. Bike left without picking the front wheel up much, it shifted through every gear. Hot dog!!! Got the time slip, had a 1.50, 60'. Ran a 6.65@101.12mph- now we're on to something. I've attached all the tickets so you can see for yourselves how the bike ran. I've got to work on my launches due to having been off the bike a  while. Not quite consistent enough to win races just yet but i'll get there with more seat time. I'm satisfied for right now- it shifts so the rest will come.

Nice, two 60 fts back to back 1.43's yeh man, that's cool! Staying in gear even better! Trying to work on front end today,gotta space rear wheel, get longer chain, braked rod and stay and a make a chainguard,, that should do the rear. Oh, gotta drill out strut, upper mount, was welded to frame! Nice! 1.4's a long way from 1.8's! lol, Bill SOHC's be going rounds in November.......we hope!

Bill, you might be surprised at your 60' once you get used to the longer arm. The bike will be lowered to and that'll help tremendously. Oh, the 60' was only 1.49, not my usual 1.42-1.45 when I had the 5.5" slick on the bike. But that Shinko hookup is really working. Try to make the17" changeover your next priority. You will find out the limitation on that new 18" tire right away now that the bike is longer.

Jim,

Yes, I have used some parts off the motor. I misplaced my clutch cover when I rebuilt the motor last season and had to use yours. Most recently, I had to take the transmission door cover off to rob the gasket because mine got broken. I'm going to rebuild your whole motor over the winter and put it in my 78' K model so I can get it back on the road again. I'd like a bit more power from the 836.  I'll put the original engine on a shelf for later use- I just need to get the tranny undercut and put a new head gasket on it. Oh yeah, and i'll use your charging system too. I surely appreciate your generosity.  Let me know if there's anything I can do for you.

That's our weekend to have visitation with the granddaughter. If we can't rearrange the schedule with her mom, I won't be able to make it myself. Its a long ways from Valdosta back to Easely, SC to drop her off. Those visitation weekends now belong 100% to her, not us.
