lower maint bike
« on: July 05, 2006, 02:45:10 PM »
I love my '70 cb but would like to have something that does not require as much maint, plus I want something to ride while I tear down my '70 for some improvements.

What do you guys recommend? I have been looking and thinking about a Nighthawk 750. Like the thought of valves that don't need adjusting and electronic ignition. I really dig the new Bonnevilles but can't bring myself to pay $8 grand plus for one.

I think my choices are somewhat limited due to me not wanting a cruiser/Harley style or the "super bike" look. I really do like the V-Max and Eliminator but think it too will be a maint pig.

I was under the impression that these bikes WERE low maintenance. :)
you could go with a yam xs750 which has a shaft drive, (no chain maint.) and is a similarly simple machine to maintain.  however DOHC.
Before becomming more brand loyal about hondas than i ever thought i could be about anything i was looking for that era yam as well, but the right honda found me first.
or did you mean a modern bike?
don't know much about those ;D
just trying to stoke the thread

I think mine might be a little higher than normal maint wise. Previous owner did not keep up with it as he should have so it is a lot of little things.

A more modern bike would be what I am looking for, electronic ignition, hydraulic valves, shaft drive would be nice.

If you like the idea of the new Bonnie, find a Kawi W650. Generally about have the price, and a MUCH better bike.  Change the oil, check the air, fill w gas.  Honda PC800.  Anything shaft driven.  80s era BMWs are terrific bikes and possibly the most comfortable bikes ever made.  Bandit 600. >V-Strom 650<. Burgman scooter.  Any year Susuki GS500/550.  If your into a kick start, the Yamaha SR500 is totally fun and great handling.  Honda Ascott- single with electric start. And cheap.
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

I was looking to do exactly the same thing. I was looking more towards another 750 so I can do a clean cafe. And then a new Goldwing with all the toys. Really not all that badly priced. We looked at them this last week. they are about 12,000 to 17,000 You dont get over 20K until you hit basic trikes.

always looking at Suzuki's savage/S40 650 single belt drive. just don't want a cruiser...  So to keep me out of trouble I'm building my first cafe racer out of a trashed 350 scrambler.
