England here I come
« on: October 16, 2012, 02:56:29 AM »
I'm heading to England in 4 weeks for a well overdue holiday, been well over 3 years since I had a proper holiday, and to meet the future inlaws before my fiance and I get married next year.  I just checked the temperatures there and the maximum where we are going is 14C today, where I am we topped 30C today and it's only going to get hotter.  I don't mind a cold winter (within reason) but jumping out of summer and into winter could be a different thing.  We will be staying in Cheshire (free accom there) and will be doing a bit of touring around, we will be doing a road trip down to see Stone Henge and seeing some friends of the missus who live in that area.  Does anyone have any suggestions of places to go see or things to do in the end of Nov and early Dec?

Way to go Andrew. Congrats are in order for you & Hannah. Make sure you meet up with a few of our pommie members while you're there. Enjoy.

Thanks Owen, we've set the date for the 1st of September next year, to give Hannahs family a chance to be able to come over for the ceremony.  If anyone in pommie land is up for a cold one, I'll be keen to meet up.  :D

That's right, they like their beer warm and their pies cold.  I doubt I could get used to that.

? England may be different but we have a lot of beer that says "ice cold" on the pumps. Bottled ale is better than pump beer anyhoo.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

Stop in at Bath on the way to Stonehenge.  Lots of historic architecture there.  Pembroke in Wales was nice...had a great castle right in the center of town.  I don't think you can walk among the stones at Stonehenge anymore but still worth going to see it...you can still get close enough.  I would also spend some time touring around Cornwall.  Check out St Micheal's Mount a tidal island with a large historic cathedral on it. Plenty of beaches and beautiful coastline too.  Has the best weather in the U.K. so since you are going in winter it may give you the best shot at nice days.

Yeah but it is halfway across the country :P.  We are planning on making a few stops along the way ;D.

srust58 most of those places are on our to-do list, except St Michaels Mount, we will have to check that out ;D.

mcpuffett we are definately going to the Lake District, the missus lived in Cheshire for 17 years and has never been there.

Tim2005 Thanks for the heads up, I'll be trying to get to that for sure ;D

+1 on the Lakes. Perfect time of year to go. Climb Helvellyn, the highest peak in the Lake District, from Patterdale and finish it off with a couple of pints of Jennings / Hartley's :)

Was in Cheshire last year for two week narrowboat holiday on the canals, a very relaxing way to chill out. A visit to Liverpool is recommended especially since all the dock areas have been revitalised. The replica Cavern Club and Beatles museum there is worth a look too. May also be worthwhile checking UK classic mags for MC Autojumbles (swapmeets).
