By the way you are going PeWe, I don't think you'll ever be happy with the settings. There will always be some area that just isn't right and could be better. Hopefully you are still enjoying the chase!!

Ha-ha....Yes these take time.
I lost time when I did not realize how important the long test run is to verify everything when really warm and I trusted that the carbs had correct needle jet.
I think the engine pulled better when giving the throttle with larger pilots (17.5), but too rich idle.... compensate by opening airscrews cause too lean when releasing the throttle in low speeed. too rich and too lean at the same time :o

Increase mains above 130? I have some in 2.5 incr to 145.... My last test runs were in total darkness and rain... other meeting car lights do not increase the sight either.... shifted to 4:th gear at 9000rpm, to 5:th gear at 8000rpm :)

I'll might give air jet 1.1 another try, again...Easy to change them. I use sticky rubber stick and fish them out when I had opened them with a screwdriver.
I hope my local tuner has 1.0 at the shelf and try that first.

No stumble at low lift is very important for relaxed and smooth driving.

Most important with these carbs is to replace the x-screws with allen heads so its possible to remove top cover and float bowls when carbs are mounted on engine (I did that back in the days as first measure when I had those screws free at my job). Remove/mount carbs every week will cause carb boots leak.

I changed the needles 3 times and test drive each time last sunday. I do all 4 in 20 minutes with tank back on.
Remove float bowls, change pilots, needle jets + switching mains + air jets 1 hour...My finger do it without any eyes finding the holes or jets. I'm worried that threads on carbs will give up, especially needle jet threads in carb body.

Mikuni TMR 32mm as plan B.
I need more encouragement to shop soon..like "I changed to TMR's on my CB750 836 with ported head and cam, got 10hp more!"

Update: I increased air jets from 0.9 to 1.1 to solve the stumble at low lift when driving bike from stop.

Result: No stumble at low lift BUT way too lean at 4000-5000 rpm (100-120km/h) 5:th gear direct after 10 minutes driving.
Pilot 17.5 is a must when this wiorked better last time except idle and low lift.
Stumbling rich at idle and the lift just above cannot be avoided with these carbs. I don't want to try other throttles (like 2.0 cut outs).

I must have missed it pages ago, but what displacement is your engine?

Ported head and cam (Action Fours SS-1) I have a new Mega cycle cam 125-20 to go in next.
Mikuni TMR32-D7 might work better than VM29 smoothbore?

I've heard people having trouble with them on a 736, too much carb. So I wondered.

I bot mine pre set up for a 900cc KAw, as my CB750 was a 888, Yosh head (for a 736), stock cam, l & b crank, etc and figured theyd be close. I don't recall making any changes in 50,000+ miles. Then they sat for 10 years till I put them on a new 888, nicer pistons, Mike's head, cam, valves, crank. They seem to be working fine. Starts and idles and pulls clean to red line. But a Dyno may tell me they need work. Only 70 miles so far.

As to what might work better, I haven't a clue. Sorry.   :(

Watch out for too small needle jets! Mine had O-6 that SUDCO recommend to Kawasaki 900. This was way to lean for my bike and most likely fried 2 pistons + made con rods bluish back in 1984 despite small air jets, 0.6. I blamed cracks in carb boots. 30 years later when I have modified the carb setup to fit CB750 OEM carb boots it ran very hot. 100-110C in oil tank. I bought an oil tank cap with thermometer. Solved the hot temp whith larger needle jets, P-0. I saw at last test that temperature increased with larger air jets, from 80-85C to 95-100C. Thermometer in oil cap is a good investment!

I'll go for:
- air jets 0.9  (I try the sitting 1.1 first)
- pilots 17.5      (test warmer plugs as NGK D7EA might help the rich idle or if I'll find a magic plug)
- needle jet P-0 (richer than std O-8) I have tried larger, P-4 not better
- needles 5DL31-4 (std needles 1 step up, richer)
- throttle cut out std 1.5
- main jets 130 (Might change next summer when I can test full speed)
- air screws 1/2 turn out

EDIT November 14:
It ran lean with pilot 17.5 + Air jet 1.1. I hade to use choke at 4000-5000 rpm after 20-30 minutes driving.
Now setup marked in green
Air jet 0.9 made a huge difference with pilot 17.5. Engine pulls much better and no lean at 4000-5000rpm on 5:th gear as  with air jet 1.1.
Idle better with warmer plugs, NGK D7EA. more to the RRRRR instead of D-D-D-D-D-D sound.
A liitle bit stumble in low speed up.

I need to test more. But I cannot do better. Maybe Throttle slide with 2.0 cut out will not idle rich as my 1.5. Throttles cost as a good start of new carbs.

EDIT: For Spring 2015
Air jet is very important. If larger than 0.9, it will cause too lean at 4000-5000rpm on 5:th gear, 100-120 Km/h
Decrease air jet, pilot and mains must be smaller.
Start from the beginning:
Idle tests 2015-02-07/08 with new cam, Megacycle 125-20:
Float levels checked again - OK with clear tube. Same levels than 1 year ago when comparing photos. Levels raised on 3, 4 when they were too low as before )
Pilot 17.5   15 worked fine first minute, then tooooo lean despite air jet 0.6.  up 17.5 One step made a huge difference!
(pilot 15 might be actual with exhaust 4-4 no numbers and air jet 0.5 / 0.6 / 0.7 /0.8 with smaller mains)
Air jet 0.9 - Had to return to 0.9 from 0.6 with pilots 17.5 that idled rich with Air jet 0.6
Main jets 120, will try up to 122.5 -125 range if needed. 130 is way to large with 0.9 air jets
Needles 5DL31-2  @ groove 2 from top.   Will hopefully avoid too rich on low throttle lifts
Needle jet O-8
Air screws 1/2 turn out as usual.
I'll report when I have done road tests.
I will not give up!!
