Carb cleaner OK to use on check valve - PD carbs?
« on: October 17, 2012, 01:53:34 PM »
Before I ruin anything (again), thought I'd check.. is it okay to use carb cleaner to clean out the check valve w/ the plastic square retainer built in to the #2 bowl on '77 750K PD carbs? As in, is it okay for the plastic?

yeah, should be no problems.
if you cant get it to flow, you can gently center punch the plastic retainer with a nail, and set a glasses sized screw in it.
then pull it out.
just be careful of the ball and spring under there.
clean out its seat, and spin the ball under your finger on some 2000 wet sandpaper to get it shiny.
i think on latter pd's they went to a brass retainer....

Yeah.. just got my replacement bowl yesterday and want to throw it on the bike when I get home. Figured I'd shoot some cleaner through there, then assemble and prove with gas. I've already destroyed one replacement diaphragm with that stuff, so wanted to be sure I wouldn't mess anything else up. Thanks for the tip!

Make sure you carefully clean out the pump and the little bowl. It does not hold much fuel so it spoils very quickly. Get a wire up through that passage that leads to the carb throat.
